Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

Depending on which side of the draw Serena is on, Maria will be a big favorite to make it to either the semifinal of final. I know she's really excited about this tournament and it is the one she's been pointing to all year, so I expect good things from her.

You also have to say that Wimbledon is the one tourney that brings the brainless ball bashers into play more than any other and that potentially could provide more landmines for Maria to get past. The speed of this surface and Maria's lack of mobility has worked against her in recent years and the Lisickis of the world can get hot and give Maria problems. It might be worth noting that only twice in Maria's career has she made it to back to back slam finals and only once in the same year. 2006 US Open/2007 Aussie Open and 2012 Aussie Open/2012 French Open. So even though she just made the French final, she hasn't exactly been great at sustaining momentum from one major to the next.

I know she got her retribution against Sabine at the Olympics, but I think she's more determined to excel here because it's her favorite tournament. So it'll be interesting to see what improvements she brings this year.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

So Maria is finally heading into greener pastures after her subdued and inconsistent dirt season...her clay game was the reason of her downfall on this surface last year, so hopefully a much more aggressive approach will be implemented this year. Masha's natural instinct is to bash the ball and not think about it twice. And this is the exact surface where this instinct has to be nurtured and rise again for Maria. That and her impoved net game of course. So I show the middle finger to all the doubters and say - GO FOR THE GLORY CHAMP!!!

I wouldn't say the clay season was too inconsistent... W, F, withdrew from Rome, F. But yes, I think she definitely had the grass on her mind throughout.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

What Maria really needs to work on is that darn serve.

If she gets to sort that problem out and it clicks well throughout the fortnight, she will win Wimbledon.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

I agree her serve is what can save her or break her. I actually thought she'd have a good chance at winning in the FO final if it wasn't for her first serve. She'd definitely won the first set. So if she can improve on that, we'll see... of course Serena's game is even more dangerous on grass but i won't accept a loss to anyone else here, especially since all she's been saying this year i show Wimbledon is her "priority"

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

Yeah, her serve wasn't stable during clay season, the same with AO and Doha. But it was more consistent during IW and Miami. I wish she will have at least that level.
On another hand I still can't believe that she only loses to Rena after AO....quite impressive actually...

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

IDK, I think she'll do well if she's healthy for the rest of the season, considering Wimbly/USO are her 'priorities'. But I still think it's a bit of a shame that the clay season didn't seem much of a priority as last year. With the lack of competition, her recent improvements and the amount of room there is left for more improvements, she could definitely end up with another couple of RG titles. It was always going to be more difficult with Serena in her form this year, but if she remains satisfied that she managed to finally win RG, she mightn't get another.

Happy for Petko - I used to dislike her in 2011 because of the dance and AO loss (I'm really predictable with this aspect of my fandom), but the way she has handled her injury struggles with grace has made me wish her the best. She seems like a genuinely nice human being.

And since when does whatever GM and these journos say have an impact on what goes on in the tennis courts. People like to hear themselves talk. So what? Also, I think you're banned so maybe I'm talking to myself.

I'm not sure how you guys are judging her commitment to clay vs. grass vs. NA HC without having seen her play on the other two courts yet. I believe she tried her best in the events in which she entered (minus the sickness or whatever in Rome), but a better player (on those days) stopped her in the final. Maria is a professional on the court and I don't see her tanking or withdrawing from tourneys without a solid reason like her health. I think you may be reading too much into her comments that Wimbledon is her priority. Last year, she said the Olympics were her biggest priority when I have to think RG was a pretty big goal for her and Hoggy given the additional clay prep she played in compared to previous years. It might be just something she says to take pressure off herself (e.g., Serena and her "nothing to lose" comments).

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

- She needs to keep the 1st serve over 60-65% constantly. Not just against hapless mugs. Move your legs, not just stand like a tree. (example Madrid final, when she hit the net with EVERY 1ST SERVE bc she couldnt go trough the whole service motion due to being paralysed.)

- Convert the fuckin breakpoints. Unclutch is ugly.

And she needs to actually bend her knees, you know, the very basics of grass court tennis Maria. I think the last legitimate knee bend was in 2009/2010.

It's only because she gets to go in a special locker room segregated from all the peasants.
