Re: Ranks

Here is a minor update to ranking points table: Caroline Wozniacki got extra 40 points after she lost her second round match in Brussels. It doesn't look good for her...

Top 10 players ranking points before Roland Garros 2013 when the last year's points are reduced and how they might gain points from the second round (R64) onwards. If they lose in the first round (R128), it gives them only 5 ranking points:

Re: Ranks

If Jelena Jankovic had won Maria Sharapova today, it would have secured Vika's return to world #2. If and when it happens, it would be a nice bonus to this tournament and #2 seed for the next tournament that will be played in England.

Thanks!
Vika should really be number 2. Her results overall is better than Sharapova last year. Too many zero pointers from injuries. I guess "should" is pointless when you have hard facts. Hopefully it changes very soon.

Also very impressed by Serenas points. I think Vika had close to 12000 at one time, which i then thought was remarkable.

Yes, I think so. Top 4 players will remain the same until Wimbledon. Serena, Vika and Maria shouldn't play any tournaments before it, but most of top 10 and top 20 players from Aga Radwanska to Sloane Stephens should play in Eastbourne (WTA premier where winner gets 470 points). In Wimbledon Serena tries to defend her 2000 points as last year's champion, Aga as a finalist has 1400 points, Vika as a semifinalist has 900 points and Maria Sharapova has only 280 points (R16) to defend.

Thanks, good information! So basically Vika needs to win the semi final. Otherwise Sharapova needs to go out real early.

WTA top 6 players at the moment. Serena, Aga and Na haven't played their second round matches yet.

1. Serena Williams 11620 + 100 = 11720 (after her first round win)
2. Maria Sharapova 9140 + 100 = 9240 (after her second round loss)
3. Victoria Azarenka 8730 + 100 = 8830 (after her first round win and withdrawal before the second round)
4. Sara Errani 5180 = 5180 (after her first round loss)
5. Agnieszka Radwanska 5070 + 100 = 5170 (after her first round win)
6. Na Li 5060 + 100 = 5160 (after her first round win)

Now that both Vika Azarenka and Maria Sharapova are out of the Wimbledon tournament, at least their ranking points remain relatively close (8830 - 9240 = 410). I am not sure what kind of tour schedule Maria Sharapova has after Wimbledon and before the US Open. It is too early to predict anything about those pre-US Open hard court tournaments before we see how well Vika will recover from her injury.

At the moment it looks like Serena Williams's #1 ranking will be even stronger after this Grand Slam tournament.
