Wills' domination has become so crushing that she is now undefeated 4 years in a row. The largest crowd of the week was 8,000 for the semis. The visiting Wightman cup team did everything but win the title. For the first time ever 3 of 4 semifinalists were foreign.

Draw Notes: Jacobs wins her first US Nationals before a sparse gathering of 2,500. The absence of top flight foreign stars and Helen Wills Moody dampens interest. An amusing incident hapened in the semis when a wire fox terrier jumps out onto the court and starts to stroll about during a point. British star Elsie Pittman laughs as she chases the dog about a full minute before it is caught by embarassed officials.

The crowds cheered against defending champ Helen Jacobs so much that some letters complained the Americans "were becoming like French crowds". Others defended the Forest Hills crowds as simply pulling for the underdog.

Notable for the first apearance of a Japanese female in the US Nationals. Mrs. Nagano is an American citizen born in Honolulu yet is seeded as a foreigner.

------------------------------------------------------------

Draw notes:

In exact draw order per the New York Times

There were 16 seeds-8 domestic and 8 foreign.

------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

The high number of foreigners generated a lot of excitement. Many close matches justified expectations. In the QF Stammers had 5 set points vs Jacobs in the opening chapter. dod Bundy survived a match point to beat Alice Marble in another QF.

Tiny Anita Lizana uses clever drop shots and foot speed to blunt the powerful forehand of "Jaja". Her compatriots mob her on victory. The Senorita faints in the frenzy and is gallantly carried off the scene by multiple men.

Blumenthal=former Baroness Levi.

---------------------------------------------

Draw Notes:

There were 8 domestic seeds and 8 foreign seeds

---------------------------------------------

Summary:

The coming World War affects the draw as Frenchwoman Simone Mathieu withdraws to return home.

Foreign seed Valerie Scott survived 4 match points in the 1R to scrape by Mary Lou Johnson 2-6 7-5 7-5. Another Brit struggles in the second round, as Betty Nuthall savced a match point vs Helen Pedersen in winning 6-3 4-6 8-6.

A final stab at a US National title by Helen Jacobs created the drama to be expected from a major. Marble led 6-0 5-3 and was on her way to a clear vivtory when Helen "threw the stadium into a frenzy" by clawing back to take the second set. Jacobs actually led 3-1 in the third before Marble forged ahead. The last game was a classic 20 point affair, Miss Jacobs coming within a point of tying it a 5-5 five times in all. Alice goes undefeated for the whole season in singles, the first time since 1932, when Helen Wills did it.

Draw notes:

Painter =married name of Marjorie Morrill.

The ALT draw sheet is missing a match. Also-the magazine reports play between Goldschmidt and Bixley, yet lists it in the draw as a default.
-------------------------
A strange stat: Only 8 of 46 women's matches went to 3 sets, yet in each case the loser of the first set won.

Total attendence was 48,410 at Forest Hills. This was down from 60,255 in 1939 and 81,472 in 1938.

Osborne had 3 match points vs. Bernhard in the stadium during round 3, leading 5-3 in set 2. The first was lost on a forced error, the other two on the way to the net. Margaret "has a service in the class of Alice Marble", but made the rash errors of inexperience. She double faulted on game point down to let Helen back in the contest.

Marble waltzes to her 3rd consecutive title at a lose of only 27 game sin 6 matches. She has been undefeated since 1938. With a World War she has no hope of capturing what may have been many more Wimbledons. She retires from amateur tennis at the end of 1940 and plays a pro tour in 1941, later moving to tennis writing and commentary.

The Jacobs-Wolfenden QF had an exciting finish. Helen was leading 5-4 0-40 when she reeled off 5 straight points to finish it, one spectacular rally saw her scrap out 5 volleys from mid court.

In the final Helen "tried everything from spinning chops to net rushing, to no avail ."

Summary

A year when many of the "old guard" were replaced with new faces who would be around for many years to come. Hart, Brough, Fry, and Krase all played the US Girl's as well as the Nationals.

With dynamo Alice Marble off to join the pros it was a golden chance to win a major.

13,000 watched the semis on a Saturday-with 10,000 for the finals. Sarah finally broke her jinx to win the long quest for her nation's title. It was always pretty, as her semi with Jacobs was strewn with errors and the final was held in a gale force wind. No matter. After holding match points vs. the great Alice Marble in 1938 many had felt "Little Sarah" would never win a major. "Pauline dashed about the court and retrieved many seemingly impossible balls", but usually produced an error after getting herself back into rallies. Betz had been the favorite going into the contest.

Betz was lucky to make the final at all. In round one a 16 year old sensation from Florida served for the match. Doris Hart wears long skirts to hide a deformed knee. Knee notwithstanding, she is a rabbit about the court. She took the first set to "hysteric applause". In set two Betz won at love as Doris' shots flew out of court. Hart came back from 2 match points in the third at 4-5 15-40- one saved with a near ace. At 6-5 she served for the upset of the year, but was broken at love. They then held serve until 9-9, when Betz ran off 8 straight points. It was the match of the women's tournament.

The Jacobs-Bundy QF was a spirited match, with Jacobs showing some past glory to upset the #3 seed. Dodo's hard rives and net advances were countered by Helen's slices and passing shots. In the second set Dodo had 4 set points at 6-5, but Jacobs saved them all, 3 on winners. When the long game was over Bundy exhibited her displeasure by chucking her racquet a good 15 yards! Jacobs was never again to enter Forest Hills after her loss in the semis at age 35.

Hope Knowles got to set point vs. Sarah in the quarters, but Cooke saved it with an overhead. Both quarters were played in front of a packed house on the grandstand.

One of the women's semis was relegated to the grandstand. It wasn't even announced over the PA system, so few had a chance to see Betz qualify for the final.

-------------------------
A mother daughter pair, Eugene and Jinx Falkenburg, lost in round one of the doubles. Jinx is a famous cover girl, actress, and later radio and TV personality, all of which overshadow her tennis.

Berta Garcia wins one match in doubles and reaches the qf, the only Cuban to reach a quality finish in a grand slam.

A finals crowd of 9,000 comes out in cool weather. Pauline Betz upsets favorite Brough to win her first of 4 US Nationals. The women fall sevral times on the grass, fleet footed Pauline doing a header on one point. Total tumbles: 4 for Betz, 2 for Brough.

As Betz won, she tossed her racquet high in the air, ran for the net and cleared it with a perfect high jump.

Notes: Attendence was good for a war-time event, 10,000 showing up on each of the last 3 days. In the first round 3 women served as lines judges "Indicating a shortage of manpower". On a field court a long battle took place between Waite and Clifton. After 50 games Waite won at 6-0 12-14 10-8 after 3hrs 15 minutes. Waite let a 5-2 lead in the 3rd slip away and saved a match point before closing out the marathon.

Despite having more "name" entries than the men, the women's quarters were given short shrift on day 3, only one women's match was put on the grandstand and none on center. On the grandstand junior Doris Hart swept by Sarah Palfrey (now married again as Cooke), who was just starting her comeback. Two close qf matches were on field courts next to each other. As word spread that the favorites were in trouble the passage between them was jammed. Brough barely escaped elimaination, her good freind and doubles partner Osbourne did not. Both went to the wire at 7-5 in the final set.

In the semis the spirited fight of "little" Dodo Bundy brought many supporters out. Dodo "Camped out at the net" in set 2 and got to 5-2. At 5-3 Dodo had 3 set points, but by playing safe she allowed Brough to regain confidence. Bundy was never the same and went out at 6-4 7-5

The Betz-Hart semi was the match of the Nationals. At 7-7 Betz survived a 10 minute game on serve. To add to the excitement both girls slipped on the turf, Betz twice. . She was 'visibly shaken" by the second fall. Hart was then broken after a game of 2 deuces. Doris came within an inch of the first set and "almost blasted the champion off the court in the second". Her volleys and drives lost none of their sting as Betz flagged.

After the intermission Hart was out of contention as Betz won by 9-7 2-6 6-1. Hart's blistering returns, which earlier had found the lines, were now missing by inches.

Errors decided the final. Betz had two match points on serve at 5-4 and missed both on mistakes. In the last set Brough committed "numerous errors including foot faults and double faults and misses of easy overhead kills and in short order Miss betz won 5 games in a row." It was soon over at 6-3. Betz had been challenged in winning her 2nd US National in a row.

Betz wins before 8,500 for the third consecutive year. Down a set point in set two, Pauline extradited herself with a gorgeous backhand passing shot.

In the mixed doubles Osborne and Talbert defend their title.

Notes: With World War Two over this event was held under happy circumstances. International tennis was set to return.

"The greatest thrill" wrote ALT(American Lawn Tennis) was the women's final. It was such a classic that Steve Flink called it one of the Greatest matches of the 20th century. Pauline was going for her 4th straight US title. Betz was less than 100% during the 45 season due to poor health. The primary cause of her defeat though was the bravery of Sarah. Behind 3-4 and a break in the third, she continued to seek the net at every chance as a crowd of about 11,500 roared for "little Sarah". Betz was as gracious as ever in defeat, jumping over the net to congratulate the winner as the fans gave them a great ovation.

An exciting early round match in the stadium was junior Shirley Fry vs. Pat Todd. The young Fry led 5-3 in the third and had a match point only to hit out. With the score at 4-5 ad-in for Pat, Fr Todd made an incredible get and fell flat on the turf. "Shirley, perhaps paying more attention to the plight of her opponent than to dealing with the return, hit the ball into the net." Todd won out at 7-5 in a tough win.

Male hearts were sorely let down after platinum blond Hollywood bombshell Eleanor Cushingham went out in round two.

Betz got a severe scare before a packed house on the grandstand in the quarters, as Mary Arnold won the first set at love! Mary was on a rampage early, coming back from 0-3 in set 2 to lead 6-0 4-3. She got no further however, as Pauline dug in her heels to take it 6-4. Arnold again was ahead 4-3 in the third, only to lose it again at 0-6 6-4 6-4.

Rosenquest=maiden name of Pratt.
