I do think Hoggy has helped Maria regain her confidence, but technically her game does look weaker than it did four or five years ago. Her movement has improved, but that has a lot to do with her getting stronger in her legs.

After her shoulder surgery she lost most of her confidence, even now it is quite evident with the number of double faults she makes, when is nervous. The most sad thing is one can easily predict when she is going to make a double fault, when ever some one stands inside the base line for her second serve she commit a double fault, when there is a wind she commits a double fault, when there is sun she commits a double etc. I want Martina Hingis in her box coaching her rather than in Anastasia's box

Her poor effort in the first set really pissed me off
It's official she'll never beat Serena Williams again. The servebot always gives it 1000% when it comes to our Martha.
Can't wait for her to piss off from the tour.

Well, I got attacked by a few people for saying Maria has no chance vs Serena on red clay.

I hope the final lived up to your expectations

I wouldn't count on that if I were you. I wouldn't be surprised if Serena would be around for another three or four years, which means that she'll be around during all of Maria's prime.

Well, it's really frustrating to witness how Maria has become a mental midget when it comes to playing against Serena Williams.
However there's one thing that I want Maria to look up to Serena: she should play as long as she still does well on court.
But noone can tell exactly how long they'll be around.

Well I guess it means what you mean by 'no chance'.

Maria has chances pretty much everywhere except grass (cus she's always gonna get broken at least once per set and Sarin...well...). But I mean even in that second set, where Maria was still only delivering 70% mentally, she showed she could take it to Serena on clay. The fact that the clay is slower in the next couple of tournaments will only help her more should they meet.

But if you refer to Maria not mentally showing up and that's why she has no chance, of course you are right. Her mentality is probably more important than her actual tennis in a lot of her matches so if she doesn't bring that she's generally toast.

But from a tennis perspective, yes, Maria does have chances.

I think they will both be around for as long as health permits and as long as there isn't a significant decline in their results. But indeed - when that will be nobody can predict. The only thing that Maria fans can hope for is that age will start taking it's toll on Serena at some point.

Serena seems to get better with age though, I remember in 09 and 2010 she was barely trying in tournaments except majors but now she is just so focused and want every single damn title. She already won 4 this year and 1 final.
In 2010 her last 5 titles were 4 majors and YEC she really stepped it up in every possible way and yeah we can lonly hope age is catching up on Serena, it's sad to say but Maria doesn't seem to add a lot of variation on her tennis to trouble Serena so age is the only factor.

I agree. Serena is playing for the history books now. That's why she is not only trying to improve on her slam record but also on other career stats such as weeks at #1 and total tournaments won because it's there that the big difference is between her and other GOAT contenders like Court, Evert, Navratilova and Graf. She can't close that gap anymore because she's running out of time, but she can narrow it down, and that's what she's trying to do.

Maria does not add a lot of variation to her game, but I nevertheless feel that she's improving each year just a little bit on what she does well already. That should be enough in itself to give Serena some problems if Maria wouldn't suffer from that mental block she has whenever she sees Serena at the other side of the net. It's really a mountain to climb for Maria. Without it I feel that she would be more competitive against Serena. Not that she would have a anywhere close h2h against her, but Maria's best is good enough to take advantage of a Serena who's not at her best. Unfortunately Maria is never at her best against Serena, at least not for an entire match.

Re: MADRID 2013 Mission: Snatch That #500!!!

Before the season started, I, like others in the media, predicted that Serena would sweep all 4 slams this year. And if not for a fluke injury, she'd still be right on track for doing just that. I also said that the French Open would be the major she'd MOST likely win, just knowing what I do about Serena. She's at her most dangerous when she has a discernible goal and proper motivation. Losing to Razzano was shocking and humiliating and then you had, to her, the added insult of seeing Maria win the French. That was all the fuel Serena needed to zero in on this year's clay season as a top priority.

And if she does complete the quest at RG, what's to stop her at getting the others on her favorite surfaces? It's not a Maria problem, it's a WTA problem. It's incredibly boring and very bad for women's tennis, but I'm not seeing any of the top 10 players capable of standing up to her right now. It probably will have to be a random lower ranked player to knock her off, like a Razzano, Cibulkova, or Garrigues because Serena's focus and ability to elevate her game when she sees Maria or Vika or Petra and other highly ranked girls seems to be too much for them to handle.

I remain very encouraged by Maria's year so far, but when you think of the fact that Maria has played Serena 6 times in the past year after facing her just 9 times in the previous 8, it gets a little depressing having to see these results so often. But that's not Serena's fault. Only Maria can do something about that. I've been wrong many times in my predictions concerning sports over the years. And, as we saw in Melbourne, unexpected things and strange twists can happen. I can only hope I'm wrong and that the rest of this year isn't some big coronation for Serena.

Re: MADRID 2013 Mission: Snatch That #500!!!

but it´s funny, because Maria has nothing to lose against Serena and can play really great but she is still under pressure despite 13 - 2 record, people even not expect her to win anymore so she can only surprise and prove us wrong, i just don´t understand that pressure all the time
