No. Not at all. She had an attacking game.

Helen never beat her and I am still bitter about that.

Mary Joe Fernandez was like Caro back then. A human wall with no weapons except for bringing the ball back in a thousand times.

I loved it when Monica Seles came out with roses at the french open and tried to give Zina one and Zina just looked at her like are you kidding me?

Not true. Over the years, MJF developed her forehand into quite a good weapon. She also developed the ability to finish points at the net.

Zina had the disadvantage of being very short for a pro player; I think she was only 5'4" or so (sorry, don't know metric equivalent).

Re: What was good about Zina Garrison's Game?

The Zina shuffle

Her heyday was a little before my time too, yet randomly I have a recording of her win against ASV at Wimbledon in 94 on tape Aside from her return stance, theother thing I remember is how much she used to sweat - she'd be dripping in it

Even though she retired in 95 (IIRC) she had quite an "80's" game if you know what I mean. Slightly funky FH technique, more at home at the net. Grass was her favourite surface (wim final, two Wim doubles titles and I think she was in the final at Birmingham about 5 times) She also won Olympic gold with Pam Shriver in 88.

I agree with those who said she maxed her potential, which I certainly admire.

Re: What was good about Zina Garrison's Game?

Here she is against Martina N in 1988. Martina made some uncharacteristic errors, because of Zina's play. Then Zina started, due to the pressure to serve out the match. She definitely had nerve issues. Then she tries some serve and volley. This was an exciting match.
