Were I religious, I'd be a "Talmud Jew", not a "Torah Jew".

I realize "Talmud Jew" has been used as an insult by anti-Semitic jerks, but I don't care.

Don't remember the titles after all this time, but mostly ones by or summarizing the work of the great man described below:
Quote:
Rabbi Hillel was born to a wealthy family in Babylonia, but came to Jerusalem without the financial support of his family and supported himself as a woodcutter. It is said that he lived in such great poverty that he was sometimes unable to pay the admission fee to study Torah, and because of him that fee was abolished. He was known for his kindness, his gentleness, and his concern for humanity.

One of his most famous sayings, recorded in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers, a tractate of the Mishnah), is "If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?" The Hillel organization, a network of Jewish college student organizations, is named for him.

I'd guess Exodus, but am not sure.

Again, I really don't read (any) Bible.

Re: Have you ever read Bible?

Another subject I have enjoyed debating is the issue of whether women should be allowed to preach in churches. Most orthodox Christians say no. But the New Testament clearly shows they may. In fact, an entire roster of female preachers appear in the last chapter of Roman.

As for the words "women are to keep silent in the church" - a message repeated twice - you will note that this was only done to two Greek churches. This is because female Christian preachers tried to usurp the pulpit. No surprise given that Greeks in the Gentile days had largely female dominated pagan temples. But female preachers are shown all throughout the NTin many other venues. Thus, women were to be allowed to preach as the Holy Spirit moved them. Same today, contrary to orthodox Christian teaching.

Re: Have you ever read Bible?

Ok here's what I don't get. In Chronicles 2, it is said that God moved Cyrus of Persia to make a proclamation that God has given him all the lands of the world and assigned him to build a Temple for him.

Here's what I don't get. Why would God make a Zoroastrian (which was what Cyrus was) the most powerful man in the world at the time? More importantly, why would Cyrus think or say that without converting to Judaism?

So is it metaphor or truth?

Or could it be that Cyrus just happens to be a model of humanism and goodwill and religious tolerance (so rare these days, let alone those days) who was STILL a faithful Zoroastrian just wanted to allow people in his empire to have freedom of religion? Something so rare in empires or realms of Abrahamic faiths.

Anyway, I just had to say it. It's puzzling some of these stories.
