Re: Sammy Stosur News & Articles Thread

^^. This.

We saw how much of a difference the cold weather made in her match against Bouchard. It's too hard to keep the muscles loose and warm when the weather is cold and damp. Lets hope that it's cold enough for the heaters to be on, or at least to just maintain a steady temperature from day to day.

Fingers crossed that she uses this time in between wisely. It does also give me some comfort that she has a good physio 'on call' for her right now. This injury is turning out to be trickier than I originally thought.

Thanks! It's great to hear her sound so upbeat about the clay season.

Why do I feel like Sam always has to defend her win against Serena in the USOpen? I mean, they are still bringing this up in interviews with her, 18 months later. And her response is still the same - she played well enough that day to beat Serena. Period. Two minutes of this interview spent discussing that woman. Sheesh.

She seems optimistic about Fed Cup and RG. As she said, she is the type of player that needs several matches under her belt to really get going. Hopefully, she can prevail despite not having as many matches yet this year.

Re: Sammy Stosur News & Articles Thread

Thanks for the link annetcl

I agree with Sinclair that it's ridiculous that they keep on bringing up Serena. Bad enough that the US media always insinuate that Sam only won because Serena was "off her game", but pretty bad form for the ABC to join the chorus. Love the fact that Sam, for all her modesty, has never given an inch: she knows she beat Serena fair and square that night, and nobody is going to get her to say otherwise.

Given the fact that she had to retire from her second match after this interview, it's a bit hard to say what it means, if anything, about how her injury will stand up when she goes back to play. But good to hear that she feels confident about her chances in Paris. She just needs a decent leadup.

I thought Sam and Lisa had confirmed they were playing doubles together for the rest of this years grand slams. This article confirms otherwise.

I was kind of expecting this. I think when Sam suffered her injury she probably let Lisa know she was free to look for other partners.

The slightly worrying thing about this is that it suggests that Sam is anticipating having to be cautious with the injury for the next few months at least. Although it is possible that Sam is just gracefully stepping aside after seeing how much better Lisa did with Laura. I can see her doing something like that, and citing the injury as an excuse to let Lisa off the hook without undue embarrassment.

Re: Sammy Stosur News & Articles Thread

^Think things changed with Sam's injury and the instant chemistry between Lisa and Laura - they also share the same agent so playing together during Wimbledon makes sense I guess. The fact that they confirmed playing Wimby together suggest to be that there is still a good chance Sam will play with Lisa during RG. Now that Julia seem to have struck a partnership with Slava maybe Sam can play with Sabine again. Seemed odd they havent played much since their good run at Wimby 2011 - I actually only just realised Sam's only doubles title after her bout with Lyme disease with the Stuttgatt title with Sabine.

Someone tweeted that since they are both playing @ Stuttgatt they should rekindle their partnership for doubles. But I think Sam would probably take it easy and just concentrate on singles because of her calf injury.

The article implied that it was Laura's singles commitments that prevent them playing together before Wimbledon. I'm inclined to doubt that Raysur will play RG, even if Sam is available. Lisa is running out of time careerwise, and given the fact that the old chemistry seems to be lost forever she would probably be more inclined to look elsewhere unless Sam insisted on them pairing up.

I think Sam should just forget doubles for now. I'm pretty sure she only plays doubles these days for a bit of extra time on court to keep her eye/arm in, but as long as there's any doubt about her calf she's better off minimizing the number of matches she has to play. I certainly can't see her playing Stuttgart. But if she does decide to play doubles again a bit further down the track, Sabs would be a good choice I think.

^Oops didn't really read the article thoroughly! - yeah doubles is low priority at the moment esp during the Clay season - I think its probably too many matches for her during one week tournaments nowadays. Yeah the dynamics of Raysur has really changed so maybe better for Lisa to move on. Probably less pressure on Sam if she picks a non doubles specialist to play the occasional tourney.

This may well have been a factor in their poor showing together. Maybe they were both expecting too much, that they could just roll back the years and recapture the old magic.

And Sam is the kind of person who would probably fret a bit about not performing well enough for Lisa, who only has doubles to earn her paycheque these days.

Stosur fit for Fed Cup battle with Swiss

Samantha Stosur will lead Australia into battle against Switzerland after declaring herself fit for the high-pressure Fed Cup clash starting on Saturday.

Stosur has been troubled by a calf problem in the lead-up to the World Group playoff in Chiasso, where Australia need to win to keep a spot in the world's top eight.

But the 29-year-old says she's as ready as she can be and has been drawn to contest the crucial first singles match against Swiss No.2 Stefanie Voegele on clay.

Jarmila Gajdosova will face top-ranked Swiss Romina Oprandi in the second singles match on Saturday with captain Alicia Molik sticking with the same combination that fell 4-0 to the Czech Republic in February.

Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty will team up for doubles on Sunday.

Stosur first suffered her injury at Indian Wells last month and the lingering problem is causing concern ahead of her French Open build-up.

However, she's looking forward to putting it to the test in the southern Swiss city.

"It's one of those things where you've just got to play it by ear and take it day by day but so far so good," Stosur told AAP on Friday.

"I feel like I've done everything I can to be prepared for this weekend so we'll go out there and give it 100 per cent.

"It's just now more trusting it and getting court time and getting comfortable again."

Stosur should have a mental edge over Voegele, having defeated her in Australia's triumph over Switzerland in the World Group II first round last year.

The Australians have only lost once to the Swiss in six ties but the strong record hasn't stopped Molik's side doing its homework.

"We're really aware of their (playing) styles," Molik said.

"This week hasn't just been about training on court. It's also been about fact finding about our opponents and we are spending more time on that as a Fed Cup team."

Gajdosova's selection for singles comes despite being the lowest ranked of Australia's four team members at No.197.

"Her quality of play this week has been of an extremely high standard," Molik said
.
Hmmm ...

Re: Sammy Stosur News & Articles Thread

Sam's doing the WTA blog from Rome:

Sam's Rome Blog: Never A Dull Moment

From the courts to the food to the crowds, there's something special about Rome for Samantha Stosur - come along to the Eternal City this week in her WTA Blog. And send your questions in!

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Ciao from Roma!

Well it was a quick experience in Madrid, losing first round, but that's the way it goes sometimes at such a big tournament. No match is going to be easy and Carla played really well that day...

Anyway from there I basically came here to Rome the next day and I've just been practicing every day - practice, practice, practice - it's pretty chilled out and relaxed here, and you can even practice at the hotel, which is pretty nice. It's good training and you also have time to relax and take a bit of a break.

It's been good. I'm really looking forward to playing a match again.

We've also been going out to dinner each night, like to the Campo De Fiori, a great restaurant here. We've been around the Vatican too - we found a really good wine bar near there with some really good food, a nice surprise while we were doing laundry at the laundromat. Apart from that we've been going to a couple of places we've known from years before, and tonight we're going to try some Japanese. It feels a little bit odd to have Japanese in Italy, but what can you do? I really love Italian food though, like Pasta Carbonara, and of course the pizza - you really can't go wrong with the pizza here.

Another thing I really like here is the surface. The clay courts here are very light and the ball gets through the air pretty quickly. So as long as it's not too windy it's great. And I've always enjoyed playing here. The fans come out, there are massive crowds even through the qualies, and everyone's really excited to have tennis here. All of that makes it more exciting for us to play here, and it all certainly creates a good atmosphere. There's never a dull moment in Rome and it's always fun to play here.

I have my first round match tomorrow against Hsieh Su-Wei. We played each other in Dubai this year, the first time in a long time - or ever, maybe. It was a good match. This one's a little bit different though. Playing on clay is obviously different, we're further on into the year now, and she's always a very tricky opponent who doesn't play conventional tennis, so you have to be prepared for anything and probably just focus on your own game. You have to do whatever you feel you need to be doing at the time and try not to get too far ahead of yourself or get caught up in any slicey dicey game...

Thanks for reading and talk to you all again tomorrow!

Sam
