Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Great work on the Maquays Jimbo!

I can conform they were sisters, as Clerici calls them sisters in his Ultimate Book of Tennis.

I will try and update soon.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

SAN DONNINO, Wally (sometimes wrongly written Sandonnino) [Active 1930s-40s.]
Italy

She was a marquise, and during WWII was unfortunately commander of the auxiliaries of the Italian Waffen-SS.
Later she was a severe tennis teacher, always dressed in black, with two dachshunds on the leash. She taught Adriano Panatta too.

I am not completely sure, but I think that her ancestors were Jewish converted to Christianity.
Her family house, Villa San Donnino, near Modena and at present a farm of balsamic vinegar, is an Art Nouveau villa, that appears in Bernardo Bertolucci's movie "Novecento" (in English "1900").

Winner: 1940- Wiesbaden;

Finalist: 1938- Roma, Wroclaw; 1939- Genoa; 1940- Palermo;

L to R: San Donnino and Vittoria Tonolli

Excuse me but in Wally's biography you have credited her as "Twice national Italian winner" in 1940. Wally did never win Singles national champs., she won the Doubles in 1937 '38 '39 '41 '42, and the Mixed in '37.
At the beginning you have mistaked her surname: Valeria San Doninno instead of San Donnino.
