With Victoria's withdrawal, if Maria Sharapova beats Maria Kirilenko to make the final, she will be No.2, and Azarenka No.3 #bnppo13

Maybe Vika´s old doubles partner Makiri will beat big bad Masha in semifinal. That would be at least a little consolation after today´s sad news. Then Vika would remain at No.2 spot which is a valuable thing for the forthcoming draws.

I am a bit worried if she has enough time to recover to play in Miami.

Well at least she has managed to defend most of her points from last year's winning streak. Really hoping for solid performances in Miami and the clay season.

20. Carla Suarez Navarro 1875 (+80)

As we know Vika´s next tournament should be the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open between 3rd and 12th of May. She will be #3 seed in Madrid even if she lose those last year´s ranking points (320) from Stuttgart´s final. http://www.madrid-open.com/en/notici...enino-de-gala/

Hopefully we shall see totally fit and healthy Vika when the clay session starts......

Top 20 after Rome on May 20th 2013:

1. Serena Williams 11620
2. Maria Sharapova 10015
3. Victoria Azarenka 9005
4. Agnieszka Radwanska 6475
5. Sara Errani 5835
6. Na Li 5335
7. Petra Kvitova 5175
8. Angelique Kerber 5135

13. Marion Bartoli 2845
14. Ana Ivanovic 2800
15. Roberta Vinci 2735
16. Dominika Cibulkova 2590
17. Sloane Stephens 2540
18. Jelena Jankovic 2500
19. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2010
20. Carla Suarez Navarro 1975

The current top 10 players ranking points from the 2012 French Open:

Roland Garros May-June 2012: Maria Sharapova (2000), F Sara Errani (1400), SF Petra Kvitova (900), SF Samantha Stosur (900), QF Angelique Kerber (500), R16 Victoria Azarenka (280), R16 Na Li (280), R32 Agnieszka Radwanska (160), R32 Caroline Wozniacki (160), R128 Serena Williams (5).
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/index.html

As you can see, e,g. Vika and Serena have good chances to gain more ranking points this year. In Rome Vika showed that she can play well on clay too.

Before the French Open starts Agnieszka Radwanska will lose her ranking points from Brussels (470) because she skips the tournament this year. Aga had some problems with her shoulder in Rome. Angelique Kerber has had some injuries too.

Re: Ranks

So do you know what that needs to happen at RG for Vika to reach nr 2?

Not that the number is important, but i guess that will be the deciding factor for Wimbledon seeding. And i would really like Vika to be on opposite half of Serena there. Would be great to see her in a Wimbledon final. (Getting way ahead of myself now)

I think it should go something like this: Vika 9005 - 280 = 8725 and Maria Sharapova 10015 - 2000 = 8015. If I'm correct, Masha needs about 710 points more than Vika in Roland Garros to remain WTA #2.
I wish they play in the same half in the main draw. Then Vika doesn't have to play against Serena before the final...if everything goes as well as in Rome...

The current top 10 players in Roland Garros 2012: W Maria Sharapova (2000), F Sara Errani (1400), SF Petra Kvitova (900), SF Samantha Stosur (900), QF Angelique Kerber (500), R16 Victoria Azarenka (280), R16 Na Li (280), R32 Agnieszka Radwanska (160), R32 Caroline Wozniacki (160), R128 Serena Williams (5).

Top 10 players ranking points before Roland Garros 2013 when the last year's points are reduced and how they might gain points from the second round (R64) onwards. If they lose in the first round (R128), it gives them only 5 ranking points:

I think Vika has very good chances to improve her ranking to #2 after Roland Garros if she plays on clay as well as she did in Rome. I hope my calculations are correct, because the ranking system can be tricky sometimes.

so Masha needs at least an SF showing in RG to retain #2
and if Vika reaches SF, Masha needs to win the whole thing
