Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Our cross-check system works ! I left both entries as an example, but we can eliminate one of them:

Edwards, (Mrs) Sybil (United Kingdom) [Married to S. K. Edwards by 1932; maiden name unknown] [Active 1930s.] [SEE ???]

Edwards, Mrs. F. E. (from c. June 1931) [SEE JOHNSON, Sybil K.]

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Info added on Tonolli (note she was still active in 1951)

http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....postcount=1970

Need to still add her picture.

Added infomation about Edith Johnson.
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....postcount=1010

We can tighten up the marriage date for Lucy Johnson-was she any relation to Sybil?
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....postcount=1012

Added info about Sybil Johnson (later Edwards)-note correction in date of marriage.

Lucy Johnstone (not Johnson) married 20 December 1930.
I think no relation to Sybil because their surnames are different.

Good grief! Mr Rollo needs to slow down and read.

Thanks for the coreection Jimbo

And great connection on Sybil LKK-you are right about cross references-they work.

Slowly and surely we'll put this jigsaw puzzle together.

Anyone is free to submit a biography. We can work out how to credit anyone-see the example of Anne Peitz by Mark.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Here is a link to Anna McCune Harper's obituary, maybe you can use some quotes from it.
http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/T...er-3079663.php

I like this story:
"Lucy and I were persuaded to enter the California State Championships," she told the Examiner's Stephanie Salter in 1981. "We really decided to enter them because we thought it would be cheaper to see all the matches as participants rather than pay for spectators' tickets. We won the ladies' doubles title and both of us got quite a way into the singles. Life changed for us then."

I added married name of her sister Lucy to the list.

I think both Kusenberg sisters were sometimes confused with each other in those early years, I read that Clara played on the French Riviera under a nickname "Mme Popp" !

There were definitely two Kusenberg sisters and they did play each other in the final match of the singles event at the Championships of Berlin tournament in 1898. I think I saw that fact stated in an early German source or in the British publication "Lawn Tennis and Croquet".

Here is proof of the existence of the sisters, who were the daughters of Gustav Kusenberg and Anna Kusenberg (née Schadow):

I agree that there were 2 sisters Kusenberg playing tennis, they opposed each other at least once on the Riviera at the end of the nineteenth century.

According the above link the info that we had in Married Names thread are partially wrong (in first name and date of death).
The exact info about the Countess are:
CLARA KUSENBERG
Germany
Born 24 July 1874
Died 10 February 1951
Married (1) Oskar Heinrich Hartwig, Count von der Schulenburg, 1895, divorced 1906
Married (2) Viktor Felix Eugen, Count von Voss (1868-1936), 1928

About her use of the nickname "Mme Popp", we have Mme Popp finalist at Cannes Beau-Site 1906. As Clara divorced the same year, is possible that she used that nickname just after the divorce. Later she continued to use the Schulenburg surname.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

There are two possibilities: either she used her sister's married name for fun, or the press made a mistake connecting incorrectly the name "Mme Popp" with that sister Kusenberg who was better known on the French Riviera.
