Re: Womens Tennis in General, vol. 2

Bartoli retires in set 2 against Petkovic. Was it a cheap win over a sick/injured opponent or is Andy really on her way back?

In the meantime, Serena is being so cool she's in two different 3R matches! We may be looking at a Serena vs. Serena match in 4R!

Whatever it was it does get her one round deeper and gives her a chance to get a little more match play in. Hopefully the more matches she plays the quicker she can get back to where she was before the injury.

Rough day for the seeds today...6 of the 16 seeds playing lost and 4 of those who won had to go 3 sets to do so.

Re: Womens Tennis in General, vol. 2

New Haven is seeking a reduction in prize money, becoming an International instead of a Premier. The thinking is that with Dallas folding, the players who want to play the week before USO will have nowhere else to go, so why waste more prize money than you have to?

"New Haven officials do not believe that a prize-money reduction will diminish its player field because players are not restricted by normal entry rules in tournaments that are played a week before a Grand Slam event. Therefore, New Haven can pay appearance fees to any players it can recruit—regardless of their ranking—without having to increase its prize money."

Does that mean the only-1-International-per-half-season rule for top 10 players won't be in effect for NH?

Hmm, maybe that's why it's not in Caro's schedule anymore for this season.

Re: Womens Tennis in General, vol. 2

I have never heard of that rule about Internationals before grand slams don't have the same rules. It sounds a made up rule to me because all of the main events the week before grand slams are Premiers (Sydney, Brussels, Eastbourne, New Haven) with an International alongside them. None of these international's have ever had multiple top 10 players to my knowledge (in fact they rarely have any, because the top 10 players normally all go to the premier event). It would be a really cheap move if true, and does nothing to help the tour.

Re: Womens Tennis in General, vol. 2

I think the 'Week before Slam' rule is for all tournaments. Not just for an International, but also for Premier event such as Sydney. And why Sydney is not restricted by normal rules as to how many top 6, top 10 players, they are allowed to feature.

Re: Womens Tennis in General, vol. 2

The general consensus in GM (not the oracle I know) is that that rule applies only to premier events the week before grand slams and not internationals. To me that does make sense, it gives your international a big advantage if you don't have that top 10 rule and everyone else does. It is a mess of situation though.

Would've been nice for Caro if Vika had pulled out before the draw was done. But to be fair to Vika, she may have still held hope then that she'd be ready to play.

We can go with that for now and postpone final judgement to when she's fit to play again. ... A football player with a broken leg, won't be clear to play this weekend .. just sayin' and s/he knows it.

Re: Womens Tennis in General, vol. 2

Kvitova, Caro and now Kerber all won their 2R matches in similar fashion; losing a close first set followed by two fairly comfortable sets.
