Re: Aussies in WTA events

They say pretty good on clay, ball sits up nicely into the wing on return strikes. Loves to run on to the forehand. Kick serve seems to suit also? [individual game style observation for particular surface type].

Hopefully can do well on clay and lead ins as usually rubbish on the grass in Wimby after, and pretty much a hardcourt player with the top spin game. Probs shouldn't bother playing at home.

Uh...yeah. One RG final and 2 other SF.

Yes, I'd say that is "pretty good".

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Yes, RG is definitely Sam's "unfinished business". It's the slam she was born to win.

Unfortunately people used to say the same thing about Pat Rafter and Wimbledon.

But even if Sammy suffers the same fate I guess the USO title isn't a bad consolation prize

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Are there any other Aussies who have a good clay game?

I know Ash has, she does the moonballing and sliding around. There was also this Aussie who's best results came in the $25k clay tournaments, but I can't remember who. Peers and Jones maybe?

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Back before her game fell apart I always thought Jarka's game was quite effective on clay. But she doesn't have a clay game per se.

Other than Sam I wouldn't expect any Aussies to have amazing claycourt skills. They just don't play enough on it when they're young. It even took Sam about two thirds of her career to realize that her game is really well suited to the surface. Prior to 2009 she pretty much sucked on it.

Re: Aussies in WTA events

So Sam pulled out of her QF against Kerber with a calf strain and Casey lost her doubles SF

Hope Sam will be okay for Miami!

VERY rare for Sam to give a W.O I can't actually recall another instance so this has me quite worried

Re: Aussies in WTA events

No good at all

Fingers crossed she just didn't want to risk it and will be fine to get back going again at Miami...

And Azarenka withdrew also

Re: Aussies in WTA events

The Eurpoeans likely better on clay as they tend to grow up on it, more courts with clay, and temperate climate more suited to that surface. Also less wear and tear on the body. French clay different mixture, more chalky/ lime like stuff in the base? Clay and grass courts higher maintenance so prevalance of hard. Jason Kubler is going to pursue a clay court career. Sam tends to cop a lot of pressure and media attention when playing at home. Seems tight when watching her matches. When interviewed once in promo mentioned to juniors her story saying if they have passion and work hard one day could be like her in grand slam events.

Re: Aussies in WTA events

^ Sam found her touch on clay eventually, but unless the surface is natural for a player Im wondering whether it is really worth putting in the time to master the surface.

About two months of the tour is devoted to the surface, four weeks to grass and the rest to indoor and hardcourt. Makes sense to focus on the hardcourt/indoor if you dont have the tools for clay. If you are good enough you find your clay-legs eventually.

Re: Aussies in WTA events

hopefully Jarka can play well here, her results in her last 25k's weren't too impressive. i'm not confident of any of them qualifying this week... it'd be good if someone did since Stosur has pulled out of the main draw

They should all win their 1st matches, but the winner of Dolonc/Burdette will be tough for Casey. Jarmila has the better draw

Jarka's draw is a beauty if she gets past Pliskova.
