Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

^Appears likely, with her singles against Yanina scheduled early and the dubs later on. It could not have been easy adjusting to the transition to the lights this evening, but she handled it beautifully.

Now she'll have a day off for her and Prpic to plot a strategy against Wickmayer ("Mikica, serve big, hit winner.")

I think Mirjana will end up at least at #101 based on today's lovely win.

Almost can't believe she's doing so much. This time of year we hardly have anything to talk about with her.

Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

Mirjana is playing with a lot more purpose this year, and it's very exciting for her fans.

Unfortunately, circumstances have conspired to suppress her singles ranking: tough draws (Safarova at AO, Venus in Florianapolis), heartbreaking losses (76 to Cepelova in the third in Sydney, then 75 in the third in Memphis again to Cepelova ), her biggest successes coming in doubles (R16 at AO, title in Midland) or too recent to be reflected in the rankings (ie, this week at IW).

It's depressing to think that her singles ranking has essentially been frozen since right after the US Open...in 2010. Worse, it's about 20 spots lower than in early July 2011 (soon to be two years ago), when she broke into the mid-80s.

I'm hopeful that we're seeing Mirjana come unstuck and that she'll write a new chapter in her tennis life this year.

Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

Knowing Mirjana, she could play lights-out tennis against Wickmayer or come out flat and stale.

I'm thinking the score will be 6-3 6-2. As to who wins, I have no idea.

Against Pegula 6 games in a row after losing second set 6-7. Against Voegele 7 games in a row after misssing 5646421 chances to get her. And now 6 games in a row after being two breaks down. Amazing. And she won set after getting to 5-5
I think it will be closer than 62 63, I guess Mirjana could win her first tb of they year in that match
No, I think she can beat her. But it will depend on Wickmaywer's form as well.

Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

Well done Mirjana!
I was following untill early second set when it was too late to continue.
I felt she would win.
Good luck vs Wickmayer!

You're quite correct about the frustration of the "frozen ranking". Some would even call it a "rut" or a "brick wall" or a "plateau" (this last being perhaps the most diplomatic assessment).

Even so, despite some clear cases of poor luck with draws, Mirjana has not risen from this "plateau" heretofore because her overall results have been so spotty. She has not managed to make a consistent impact with performances during any calendar year. Consequently, this is why she has always just missed finishing a season in the Top 100.

Now, we see things taking a clear change. Her game has ticked up a notch this new season and she is doing something she has not yet done, i.e. perform well at WTA-level events in Winter/Spring. The QF run in Midland was one telling indication, though she should have reached the final. This refreshing effort at Indian Wells is another indicator of the surge in quality. Normally she is bounced out of every WTA encounter at this time of the year.

The doubles success is important, too. Not only because of the money it provides, but because it is indicative of the fact that she has really tightened-up her game, and because these doubles wins and her presence out there with players like Jankovic send a message to the others: "Lucic is in the mix. She's a dangerous player who is to be noticed." These are factors that help her cause in general.

She appears to have sunk her teeth into a reliable game-plan out there. As someone else pointed out, she is not floundering in sets, not getting bageled. She's always doing some damage.

No matter what, this level of performance so early in the season is a marked change. If it continues ....

As for Wickmayer, a victory certainly can be achieved, but Mirjana will need to serve a few more aces and keep that 1st serve % high, as well as just play the game she's been playing. I expect a fight from her.

GL to Mirjana. She's overdue for a Top 50 win, too.

Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

As I assumed she's on Osprey list which was expected to be strong, but this is way to strong for a 50k. Mirjana's not in MD She's 1st alt
She would be 3rd in MD at 50k in France the same week.

Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

I'm thinking the factor leading to this overall upswing in performance is good coaching. Prpic must be making a positive impact on her game. This is the best coach she's had since her comeback, and he worked with her briefly way back in the 90's.

Re: Mirjana's spring 2013 campaign

I believe she can give Wickmayer some trouble. Would be a very sweet win indeed if she can pull it off. Sending all the good vibes in the world to Miki. Ajmo lady.

If Mirjana is first alt at Osprey it must be an insanely deep draw! It's a beautiful facility and locale and so close to home-base (for many tour stars!) but very unrewarding to fight against so many Top 100 players for such meager points and $$$.

I suppose if she lost in R1 it would just be a result that doesn't count on her 16-best ranking docket. But each tournament now is about positioning herself to gain optimum confidence, which means: best chances to win when it counts the most. She's presumably playing Charleston before the Euro-swing.

Do you think it's even worth it for her to play an Osprey $50K that's so stacked, provided she makes the main draw?
