Legendary German players inspire Goerges

Dubai: Last year’s losing finalist Julia Goerges wants to go one better at the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open this year, and helping this cause is a handful of German legends led by former world number one Steffi Graf.

“It’s a big motivation as we [Germany] had a really great time in tennis in the past with Steffi [Graf], Boris [Becker] and Michael Stich. It’s great to have this history, but it always springs the expectations up in the country. It’s a huge motivation that a lot of German players have won things in the past, including Grand Slams,” Goerges told the media after attending the official draw for the tournament here on Saturday.

“For me, Steffi is a legend. We are never going to achieve what she has achieved, but we just try to get as close as we can and go with the time. Tennis has changed a lot and it’s become even tougher. But we just try to stay with it and do as best as we can,” added the 24-year-old German.

Goerges, who reached a personal high of World No15 last year, had a splendid 2012 where she reached two finals —losing to Agnieszka Radwanska in Dubai and Victoria Azarenka in Linz. And this year, she has spent a considerable amount of time preparing during the off-season in Dubai.

“Dubai is one of the biggest tournaments. You always want to come back, and only the best players are competing here. So for me it’s a big challenge playing against the best players and that’s how you can get better,” she said.

Being part of the German Fed Cup team helped as Goerges chose to skip the Doha Open and make an early trip to Dubai, where her first round opponent will be fifth seed Sara Errani. Progress through the next two rounds may set her up against top seed Victoria Azarenka.

“That [match against Azarenka] is a long, long way. I have a first round challenge with a top 10 player and it’s going to be tough enough for me. I am thinking of going one step further. Maybe I can surprise myself, but first of all I should take the challenge of the first round,” Goerges said.

Re: Julia Görges Interviews and Twitter thread

Too lazy to correct the google translation.
Don`t know why they were picking out that contentious phrase for the headline of the article in such big letters.
Brand new is that her mother is Franconian and she therefore is a fan of Bayern Munich. A little funny because every original Franconian is definitely a fan of Nurembourg and not of Munich - and that Golf sport annoys her.

Neele Voigt (Badminton/156), 6. Janika Puls (Segeln/154), 7. Annemarie Stark (Boxen/137), 8. Inga Czwalina (Springreiten/118), 9.

Marie Kraack (Vielseitigkeitsreiten/115), 10. Christel Gülck (Schießen/13).

Insgesamt wurden 2429 Stimmen abgegeben.

Lübeck. Things come to those who wait, says an old adage. A few times it has not worked out, but yesterday it finally happened: Julia Goerges, No. 20 of the world tennis rankings, visited the editorial board of Lübeck news. The occasion: The readers had the bathroom Oldesloerin elected for the sixth time overwhelmingly Athlete of the Year. There were flowers, a trophy and a collage.

Quite naturally, in gym clothes, with no airs and graces, just sympathetic - that the 24-year-old outfit presented in its new sponsor (Fila). And talked openly about God and the world. In the evening she would press the Cup against Bayern in Dortmund firmly crossed. Finally, it is great Bayern fan. Where it comes from? "My mother came from the Nuremberg area," told Görges. "Sometimes you hear from her a few chunks out Frankish."

She was frugal. Very much so. It is not as if they were after each tournament in the world a little grudge. "I'm really not a fast hopper. I think about a purchase for a few days and compare the prices. "

A prejudice is also true that a tennis professional will remove everything. "I book as the flights and the hotel itself, since I know what I'm doing," revealed Görges flying much rather than with the Emirates Airline Lufthansa ("They have better rates").

And she is happy again and again that she has let her eyes lasered. "I used to be like a mole. Now I have a vision of 130 percent. "From the former Kiel handball Karabatic she heard that" even a vision of 180 percent "had. In a future issue of "Focus" on health, they report on their experience with lasers.

Last night it was time for Görges again: Pack your bags. Today we walk from Hamburg to London to the United States. First stop: Indian Wells in the desert, where there is the largest nationwide millionaires. "A super-conditioning, a spa oasis. With a golf course right next door, "told the Oldesloerin. "But golf is not a sport for me. It's too boring. I've done a few haircuts and even a few games. The TV may look exciting. But for me there is just no oomph there. "

At the Fed Cup against Serbia (20-21. April in Stuttgart) it is looking forward. "I am proud to be a German. I love playing for my country. It's fun as a team to play with the other girls together. This is a change, that is something special, "said Goerges.

Head coach Barbara Rittner was pleased therefore with Görges particularly about the award of the LN: "This is the recognition for their achievements. There's a lot of work behind it, "Andrea Petkovic also praised her colleague:". Jule 2012 has played the best season of her life and finished the year among the top 20. That's a crazy performance. She absolutely deserves the award "And the president of the German Tennis Federation, Dr. Karl-Georg Altenburg, said:". The Fed Cup is Julia Goerges a fixed size. We hope that they the German tennis as long as possible with her refreshing game's momentum and improved their position in the world rankings on. "When Julia Goerges will keep this up, then they would soon reap the LN-track number seven.

LN-Athlete of the Year 2012
Julia Goerges got the vote for election Sportswoman of the Year 2012 by the readers of Lübeck news 961 votes. Behind the "jaggies" at number two followed the triathlete Anke Lakies (355) and the main handball Franziska (256).

The further sequence: 4 Madeline Gieseler (Fußball/163), 5 Neele Voigt (Badminton/156) 6, Janika pulse (Segeln/154) 7, Annemarie Stark (Boxen/137) 8, Inga Czwalina (Springreiten/118), 9

Marie Kraack (Vielseitigkeitsreiten/115) 10, Christel Gülck (Schießen/13).

They pick such headlines because they think it might attract readers. It's usually the author of the article itself that chooses a headline. Regular grievance for just about every journalist.

I suppose the car wash chamois is supposed to be cute and playful, but I guess I prefer design that speaks more to the power and grace of a player, which Jule has in spades.

Translating her direct quotes:

Quote:
"It always takes some time to get used to hard courts"
"I always need 5 to 6 days. Since Fed Cup, the surface has constantly changed. There's also the time difference"
"I made the 4th round at the AO and I played two very good matches in Fed Cup. I personally don't really care about about my win/loss stats. In general, I'm very satisfied with the way I'm playing right now."
"I'm satisfied and I feel very well on the court"
"In general, it's good to see on which level I'm playing. Then you know you're on the right path"
"I have to become more consistent. Top 10 players are. I know that I have that level to get there and beat them. I have already shown that."
"I have to slump as little as possible. Top players play on a certain level every week and win their matches. That's my goal"
"In the last 2 or 3 years I was able to establish myself up there. That was an important step in the right direction. Now I'm trying to take the next step"
"Fed Cup for me is something very nice. I'm very happy in the team"
"Serbia isn't an easy opponent, but if we're all fit we have a very good chance"

Julia`s confidence at least seems to be unwavering.
Time to come up with something really good.
