Re: #1Rena Does Her Duty In Dubai
Please pull out. #1 ranking will come and stay stay with wins in Miami and Roland Garros, rest up and bottle that energy and will power for the months ahead. #thebigpicture

Re: #1Rena Does Her Duty In Dubai
Do we actually have a reason for this paranoia/worrying over Serena's health? I didn't see her SF/F this weekend, but it seems like she's gotten over her illness? She only has to play 4 matches this week and she's not playing for another 4 weeks (apart from a joke exho against Vika in March which will undoubtedly send this forum's anxiety through the roof) so I'm confused by all of this withdrawal talk.

She was sluggish as hell the whole tournament, she looks tired. Reeree needs to replete her energy reserves and I'm not sure the 3 1/2 weeks from Dubai ending until Miami + then her most intensive clay season ever is enough. Every tournament clocks itself on Serena's body and mind.
Why play somewhere she has never bothered to in the past when a part of the season is coming up which she wants to give more of herself than she ever has.
EDIT: PLUS, although I am not personally worried about her physical health so much as her energy-focus levels, facts are that Serena not being in 100% tip top shape has resulted in Victoria getting all the glory this season. I want her to come back rejuvenated and fresh like daisy in the Florida sunshine.

I don't like this 2nd round match all. Bartoli is going to be pumped up to beat Serena.
Obviously, Serena is going to feel tired. And if she's still not feeling well, I wouldn't be surprised if she loses.

I am pretty sure we do. Just watching her this week she didn't look well. She looked tired from the start fighting cold/flu on top of it. The first time I saw positive emotions and a smile on her face was after she won the QF and the #1 ranking with that. Before the tournament even started she didn't sound too optimistic herself and never said she was physically all good. She said at her presser that with regards to her back and ankle she takes each day at a time , this didn't sound good enough to me. Besides, the lack of her serve in my honest opinion (and I don't think I am wrong) is because of her still present back problem, yes it's better than it was at AO, but she was still stretching it in this tournament and not able to control the serve or even make first serves.

Re: #1Rena Does Her Duty In Dubai
Serena wouldn't play if it was detrimental to her health. I trust Serena knows what she's doing. Some of yall would like Serena to withdraw from every tournament except the four Slams and Miami.

She did so in doubles just a month ago at the AO. I can think of numerous other examples throughout her career where she has done this. Most obvious being 2007 Wimbledon which took her out for the whole summer. Serena is someone who can overplay from time to time. The concerns are legitimate.

Re: #1Rena Does Her Duty In Dubai
Ranking-wise, she shouldn't withdraw from Dubai to avoid the zero pointer...
But as some have said, I trust Serena. She has done it years after years and she knows what is best for her body.

But both examples are slams. She loves the slams and I think in her recent loss to Stephens in the interview she said she is never ever retiring from a match in a slam... . Yes she should have skipped doubles at the AO this year, but they were doing fabulous prior to that QF match against Errani/Vinci. Even prior to that doubles match, her singles games was okay as well.

Re: #1Rena Does Her Duty In Dubai
If Serena plays in Dubai she's gotta be playing for the title not just to avoid a 0 pointer. If she doesn't win her match then it will only serve as motivation going into Miami. Win win for the longterm either way.

Re: #1Rena Does Her Duty In Dubai
All I want is for her to be healthy, she was in such amazing form coming into AO, everything was there, even with injured ankle she played great, that match against Kirilenko was just something else stats wise, and then she hurt her back in the QF doubles, got it even worse in QF singles and that was the end of it. She's definitely not well yet, she is just unable to serve or control the ball the way she normally does. Hopefully the time between Dubai and Miami will fix it. She has a long and tough season in front of her.

Your point is not valid because those are Slams. Serena will be the first to retire from a WTA event if she feels like she's not in shape. This week it was a cold/flu. It's freaking flu guys...like it's tough to breathe but it fades away in a few days....Now she has said she feels fine and better heading into dubai where she has to play 4 matches to win...she should. 4 matches...that's nothing in 7 days. and then she has 4 weeks off. Round 2 in Miami starts on saturday/sunday...
