Re: Ranks
What if Vika loses in the semi to Serena and Serena wins the final against Maria -> would Vika be #2 or #3 behind Serena and Maria?
PS: My very first avatar on this forum was the same as your current one.

Re: Ranks
As a semi-finalist Maria Sharapova has already secured herself 9545 ranking points, and Vika will have to reach the final for 9725 points. If Vika lost in a possible semi-final to Serena Williams, Maria would secure her position as No.2.
In the terrible scenario if Na Li beats Vika in final and wins the whole tournament, then Serena is No.1, Vika is No.2 , Maria is No.3, Aga Radwanska is No.4 and Na Li is No.5...

At first a humble quote from yesterday:

Now No.1 position is in Vika´s own racquet. Next semi-final against Sloane Stephens and then the final against Na Li or the arch-rival Maria Sharapova. If Vika makes a final, and Maria loose a semi-final to Na Li, then Maria will be No.3. If Vika wins Maria in final, Vika will remain No.1 because she needs to win the final to get more ranking points than Serena Williams already has.
1. Serena Williams 9970
2. Maria Sharapova 9145 9545 10045 10645 (semi-finalist)
3. Victoria Azarenka 8825 9225 9725 10325 (semi-finalist)
4. Agniezska Radwanska 7750
5. Na Li 5355 5755 6255 6855 (semi-finalist)
6. Angelique Kerber 5695
16. Roberta Vinci 2585
17. Sloane Stephens 2066 2466 2966 3566 (semi-finalist)
18. Lucie Safarova 2160

Re: Ranks
As we know the current top 5 after Australian Open looks like this:
1. Victoria Azarenka 10325
2. Serena Williams 9970
3. Maria Sharapova 9545
4. Agniezska Radwanska 7750
5. Na Li 6255
Ranking points that the current top4 players defend from Doha to Roland Garros in 2013:
Doha February 2012: Victoria Azarenka (900), F Samantha Stosur (620), SF Agnieszka Radwanska (395).
Dubai February 2012: Agnieszka Radwanska (470), F Julia Görges (320), semifinalists (200).
Indian Wells March 2012: Victoria Azarenka (1000), F Maria Sharapova (700), semifinalists (450), QF Agnieszka Radwanska (250).
Miami March 2012: Agnieszka Radwanska (1000), F Maria Sharapova (700), QF Victoria Azarenka (250).
Charleston April 2012: Serena Williams (470).
Monterrey 2012: Timea Babos (280); Vika should play here after Miami tournament in April 2013; this tournament was played last year in February.
Stuttgart April 2012: Maria Sharapova (470), F Victoria Azarenka (320), SF Agnieszka Radwanska (200).
Madrid May 2012: Serena Williams (1000), F Victoria Azarenka (700), SF Agnieszka Radwanska (450), QF Maria Sharapova (250)
Rome May 2012: Maria Sharapova (900), F Na Li (620), SF Serena Williams (395), R16 Victoria Azarenka (125), R32 Agnieszka Radwanska (70).
Brussels May 2012: Agnieszka Radwanska (470).
French Open May-June 2012: Maria Sharapova (2000), F Sara Errani (1400), semifinalists (900), R16 Victoria Azarenka (280), R16 Na Li (280), R32 Agnieszka Radwanska (160), R128 Serena Williams (5)
As we can see Vika, Aga and Maria have to defend a large amount of ranking points in this time period, and on the other hand Serena and Na Li will have great opportunities to gain more points comparing to last year. According to Serena Williams´s official site http://serenawilliams.com/schedule/ she is planning to play in Doha, Dubai, Miami, Stuttgart, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros.
Vika´s official site doesn’t tell yet about her actual tour schedule: http://www.vikaazarenkatennis.com/tour-information/

Re: Ranks
50 weeks as No. 1.
Quote:
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Victoria Azarenka hit the 50-week mark as the No. 1 ranked women's tennis player Monday.
Azarenka protected her top ranking by winning the Australian Open Jan. 26. She was atop the rankings for 19 weeks early in 2012 and returned to No. 1 last summer and had held the position for the last 31 weeks.
Her 50-week run at No. 1 is 10th most in WTA history. Carolina Wozniacki is ninth on the chart with 67 weeks.

It´s true. She was the first player to become #1 without ever being #2. She just fell to #2 temporarily, when Sharapova won the French Open.
