Re: Can Maria Sharapova defend her Roland Garros title this year?

Well.. they should cancel RG or play the women's event on hardcourt. Any good claycourters?
Who will be favored over her? Na Li? Stosur?

But let's wait until the clay season. Someone might go on a run like Pova in 2012

Except Serena had the best clay court season in 2012 leading up to RG, so let's not.

Sharapova played 16 matches on red clay in 2012, won all of them , including matches vs #1,#3,#5, #9, #11, #15 + Venus
She didn't play vs Serena , but's it's not Masha's fault that Serena played 4,5 matches on red clay in 2012 and lost to Razzano at FO even being in decent physical form. Nobody from top players was injured during French Open or not ready after injuries, without match practice etc

Australian Open 2013 looked different , because Serena was playing on one leg and later without serve, Sharapova was without match practice and her form wasn't enough for matches vs tops, only Li Na was shining bright until she dropped twice and got injured just to give Vikareka one more title. What is more Vika escaped like rabbit from meeting Serena in Brisbane a few weeks before AO

Re: Can Maria Sharapova defend her Roland Garros title this year?

I love the desperation of Masha fans trying to separate blue and red clay. There is no difference between the two.

And before any of you bring up Fed/Nadal example, don't forget Federer beat Nadal at Madrid on red clay. Nadal has always underperformed at Madrid compared to RG.

Same stuff. Maria was very lucky Serena lost in the 1st round.

We will see this year. It's going to be fun.

As if anyone has ever considered Charleston more important than Stuttgart or Madrid more important than Rome. Even when Madrid has red clay it is far less similar to RG than Rome.

You can turn things around and around "ad nauseam" to make facts fit your point of view, but you are only confirming my previous post. I may dislike (or not) Pova, but if she had won AO in exactly the same way Arazenka did, I would never try to discredit her with all the useless number of excuses you are using.

If you really don't think there's any difference between the clay of Madrid and the clay of RG I think you need your head examined.

It has nothing to do with the color, but the way Madrid plays is far different than RG. Even before the color change. The only difference now is that it's harder to slide on the new blue clay.

because when we say red clay we mean red clay as at Philippe Chatrier.

Madrid was never a genuine red clay tournament, even when clay was red there , it was much faster.

I don't understand why posters on TF understand that hardcourts in Miami/Moscow and Cincinatti are absolutely different and those players who are favourites on slow HC may not be favorites on fast HC and vice versa, but still they can't understand that player whom Har Tru suits the best might not feel comfortable on real red clay at all

Re: Can Maria Sharapova defend her Roland Garros title this year?

I don't really understand why 74 people answered this question with 'no.' I mean, the answer to the question 'Can Suarez-Navarro win the FO 2013?' is not no. Anything is possible. And yet people are definitively writing Maria off as though she simply has no 'chance' to win it.

I mean, the question isn't 'Will she win it for a fact?'
