Re: Active players that now seem old school?

lol like 50% of the players named in this thread make no sense whatsoever.

Suarez Navarro, Vinci and Hsieh are the only ones really. Most of the rest play a pretty modern game.

Just because CSN has a 1HBH doesn't make her old-school. She's a baseliner who plays way behind the baseline.

Re: Active players that now seem old school?

Italians are the only ones that still play old school. Others mentioned in this thread have some modern game in them.

Although modern game dominates old school (as is natural), the best player in womens tennis would be the one that combines both games together. Be strong at the modern game but have the x-factor of the old-school game.

Federer and Graf are the best examples (and to some extent Henin, but her variety is overrated as she didn't have the natural touch).

In womens tennis there are 2 versions of the modern game: Flat ball-bashers and Big top-spinners. Currently flat hitters are dominating, however in the near future top spin players will eclipse them. Simply because the latter will produce less errors and most females haven't realized this but with the modern strings you can generate power with spin.

Just look at Kerber and Errani, neither is a complete enough player to reach the top, but they are rising. Stosur has been in the Top 10 despite having big deficiencies as well. Caro reached #1 without any weapons.

You don't seem to be aware that Kerber has had her best results on fast surfaces where her flat shots can penetrate...

A 1HBH is by definition old-school.

No matter how many times you state this, it never becomes true.

Big fan of Graf, but Henin displayed a wider range of variety and tactics on average than she did; I'm not sure it's even comparable.

Re: Active players that now seem old school?

I disagree that simply having a 1HBH makes a player "old-school" overall, although the 1HBH itself should maybe be considered an old-school stroke given it's stark lack of prominence compared to earlier eras.

KDK's play style is pretty unique even in the 90s.
I mean it's not about old or new, no one plays like Kimiko taking most of the ball early and that's one of the reason why she can survive even in her 40+...

Old school = old-fashioned, from an earlier era.

1HBH definitely fits that definition in the WTA. CSN is the only player in the top 100 who still uses it.

Jill Craybas and Tammy Tanasugarn are from the old school IMO.let's enjoy watching these players craft and skill at creating a rally and constructing a point ,without a pounding winner being hit!
