Globally Mariah is probably more popular than Serena thanks to the fact musics has a broader approach to regular audience than a specific sport event.


Still, I'm not really sure about this. We need to collect stats in order to be sure.



There is another related point that I'd like to discuss though.



Serena at least can say she is the best in the world in her profession in this era and even can be in the discussison of the best of all time while Mariah can't say that ( she is the best comparing to her competitors in said field) about her profession even at of now.




The competition in sports is more clear, cut and dry, while in the music entertainment industry, it depends on many other factors to determind one's talent that leads to the popularity of an artist.



Pop music is more popular among other kinds of musics but tastes are different in every country and even every single person. Mariah can't say she is more talents than Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Madona, or it's debatable that she is more well- known than Rhinana, Britney, Gwen,... world wide. We need surveys and collect information for those.




Another point that is often overlooked is while artists from English speaking country is more popular world wide, there is no reason to believe they are the top talents in the world, comparing to other countries. There are tons of artists from every country like in Europe : Italy, Russia, Germany, France, Poland, Greece, Sweeden, etc.. From America like Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Chile,Columbia, Peru, etc... Asia like China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Philipine,etc..and then Africa, Australia,..... basically every country has tons of their own talent artists, opera singers. They don't have a chance to be known world wide as much as American singers due to many reasons, but it doesn't mean they are less talents, if not more.
