People can discover their sexual identity later in life. Lots of people either suppress or deny their true feelings. I fail to see how your story leads to the conclusion that one can get homosexual by chance. Or how a ban on public homosexuality can help prevent that for that matter.

Sure, but I'd just like to reiterate that my point was regarding Brazil being the "biggest" Catholic country, of course South America is generally Catholic and as pointed out is very gay-tolerant. The thing is that despite Brazil's size Catholicism isn't institutionalised in the same way it is in the states which were formerly part of the Holy Roman Empire. So my point, I suppose, is that it's not really the "biggest" Catholic country in the world except in terms of population size.
As for Guyana, Belize - there is still a strong Christian presence and history of Catholicism in these countries. Generally where the Spanish went they Catholicised. I thought their stance on LGBT issues was more to do with the fact they are substantially poorer than Argentina, Brazil, even Peru and Mexico and don't have the "time" for more progressive social issues as opposed to the being overtly against LGBT rights due to their socio-religious make up of the countries on the whole.

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality
Neither Guyana or Belize were Spanish in their most recent history and the Dom Rep is poorer than English speaking Caribbean islands but more liberal. Most Christians in Guyana are Protestant not catholic.
Hispanic countries including Spain and Portugal have more progressive policies on LGBT issues than the Anglosphere equivalents.

conservative attitude out of a restrictive environment gradually eliminates opposing thoughts from the mind over a period of time......i am guessing that's their thinking behind the ban......sex being a thing of mind, sexual identity can change in some circumstances......let's say a public hugging happens between a straight guy and a homosexual......there is a chance that the homosexual man could influence the mind of the straight one......it can happen......so by imposing the ban, they are preventing excessive physical contact between the same sexes and probably making sure that people remain what they are......
of course they are homophobic but at least they are not some hypocritical western country......they are being clear about it.......

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality
What century are we living in exactly? You really think one's sexuality can be influenced by hugging another man?

In your theory gay men should probably be limited from hugging straight women as well, heaven knows how their minds might be influenced.

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality
I live in Russia, so know the rules and laws inside out....
In Russia public homosexuality is not banned , it's just forbidden to propagandize homosexuality among children....
It means that in cartoons is forbidden to show homosexual pairs , write in textbooks that "family can consist of mother and father or father and father" , two gay teachers will be banned from demonstrating their relationship when they are at school etc. But it doesn't make any other restrictions
so kissing in the streets for homosexuals is forbidden if only a child is staring at them, because it can affect his sexual orientation .......

The ignorance of this post. Just..... I don't know what to say. The idea that touching or being around a gay person can make someone gay is straight out of 1950 or something. Even some of the most virulently homophobic people don't believe you could become gay by touching a gay person; because of course there is absolutely no scientific basis for that idea. You act as if homosexuality is a contagion that can spread by contact. I am taking a wild guess here and saying you have never met a gay person in your life, and if you have it was only in passing (and good thing you stayed far enough away to avoid contamination or you'd be a flaming homo by now).

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality
Are people really acknowledging let alone replying to a person who was outraged at parents getting arrested after burning their child as a form of punishment ?

well it's a different thing if norwayians have some kind of evil fetish for indian kids because they don't seem to be stopping with one snatch......they snatched away kids from a couple earlier under the same nonsensical act of theirs......
it's them who are looking like idiots to the world now......without understanding the cultural differences......
as for this thread, i don't get what's wrong when somebody expresses what he thinks could be the reason behind imposing an act like this one......nashamasha, a person from russia itself, provides some idea about why this might have happened and gets fired immediately by lesborah......
you guys think you know more about other nations better than their own people? too funny......
