Since when ys believes in democracy?
The failed attempt at defining it is not for poor choice of words, he had made it clear in several political discussions that he could care less about the concept.
All these complain about "rights" is seen by him as nuisance to the unfettered exercise power by a strong man.
If you glean discussions where Putin is criticized and/or accused of using despotic tactics against his opposition, ys retort is generally dismissive and contemptuous of the opposition. Characterizing them as unworthy, unstable and a nuisance to the exercise of power from Putin regime.
He uses expression like " not big deal"; "Putin had no choice"; "not a sunrise"; "those people are irrelevant liberals trying to get attention from the West"; Putin does not care what the west thinks.
By the way, ys lives in the USA, claiming only for professional reason; but he is very active in American political discussion, espousing despotic, right wing positions.
He does not believe in the ideals of the USA, especially the equality part; putting him to the right of even today's Tea Party movement and some white supremacists..

What separation of powers? What kind of separation when US esidents routinely appoint marionette judges following their political guidelines. It's separation in name only these days. Of course, it no longer any kind of democracy in Russia or in USA. IT is called ochlocracy , where mediocre populist presidents simply following what is to their electorate liking..

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality
In fact, I don't even think that Russians in average are much more homophobic than people from Western countries. It's just that every nation does have ( apart from religious nuts, whom you can't really blame for their homophobia ) that pretty significant macho group of people ( which end up as elite military, law enforcement, soccer fans/hooligans , career criminals, etc, where looking rough, tough, fearless is all important ) who are pretty naturally homophobic, and it's just that Russians somehow like to have that kind of people in power.

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality
why are people so critical of russia? let them do what they want to do and think what's better for their own country......with this new law they probably want to prevent naturally heterosexual people from becoming homosexual by chance......
the thinking of most traditional eastern nations is that heterosexuality leads to reproduction and evolution whereas homosexuality leads to nowhere......

That's silly though . Maybe not so much Europe but many countries are complaining of overpopulation. You'd think they'd be thankful that not every couple is reproducing .

While I would still be interested to see some stats that actually prove that, in Brazil their Catholicism is counterbalanced somewhat by the fact their social attitude to sexuality in general is so much more open than in parts of the West where even talking about sex is still a faux-pas.

The catholic countries in the Americas are the most liberal on LGBT issues, compare Guyana and Belize to Brazil and Mexico.
Same in the Caribbean, Dom Rep way more liberal than say Jamaica.
