Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event
Hi Mark,
Nice list for Bermuda.
Are you sure the surface of Bermuda was a cement-like hard court?
My reasoning is twofold:
1. British sources used "hard" for surfaces that today would be called clay. As a British colony it would be natural to use this in the case of Bermuda.
2. I have some copies of American Lawn Tennis where the event is described. I'm pretty sure it's clay.
Here is an ebay pic from 1934
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1934-Press-Photo-Bermuda-Amateur-Tennis-Championships-Mens-Doubles-/390484162302
Also
1950 Elizabeth Rosenquest d. Helen Rihbany 5-7, 6-3, 6-4
1951 Beverley Baker d. Barbara Scofield 9-7, 7-5
Rosenquest (later Pratt) always went by "Betty"
should be Beverly and not Beverley (I add the extra "e" this a lot myself!)
I will double check my ALT's to confirm the surface and try to pick up results for 1942-43 and 1945-46.

No, but I'm quite sure it wasn't grass.

I would agree with that. It looks like clay in all the old ALT pics I've seen. In addition the Coral Beach event was on clay.
The first official championships were in 1922. There were events at the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club before 1922, but they were not considered the Bermuda Championships.

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event
The New York Times reports that the 1922 Bermuda Chmps were played on a cement court painted green.
A new stadium was built and used for the 1932 event. The surface was en tout-cas (clay).
I have found the name of the first champion. She was Mrs Eugenius "Eugene" Harvey (nee Bessie Gosling).
There was a Chmps in 1915. The last day was March 12. Held at the Hamilton Hotel Tennis Club. The NYT doen't mention a women's singles winner. The doubles was won for the third year running by Alice Gosling and Bessie Harvey.

Yes and not.
She was Ruth Riese, of Saginaw, Michigan.
But her maiden name was not Wise, because in the draw of 1920 U.S.Clay Court Champs. there were Ruth Riese and Ruth Wise (and also another Ruth, King).
http://www.tennisforum.com/showthrea...=432272&page=2
Her husband was Alfred F. Riese

and, as confirmed by LKK in Maiden Names thread, her maiden name was Smith.
