and I think there is a significant difference between Slovenia/Croatia and the rest of former Yugoslavia

As for Turkey - their biggest opposition parties are in favour of gay marriage and even the conservative government works with LGBT organizations so I'm not really sure you can compare them with Russia

Slovenia might be the only exception.
Still, as I said, none of them are banning pubic homosexuality, whatever it means.

Tell me, if they had an option to do that without a slightest possible backlash from EU and other Western placeholder institutions, would they do that? Something suggests me that that could be quite popular with electorate. The difference, Russia and Putin don't give a damn about EU or any other human rights related noise for that matter.

Without EU, they wouldn't bother organizing pride parades and passing anti-discriminatory laws. And that's about it.
At least here nobody even thought of such ban until fucking Russia came up with it. Because of the whole fucking Kosovo business we got too tied up so whatever fuckery they think of somehow translates here. It displeases me very much.

I did swear a lot here.

Re: Russia bans public homosexuality

They just try to please the homophobic majority, there are plenty of gay people in the entertainment industry and even in politics. I doubt that the law would be used by courts and law enforcement agencies, but it sends a really hateful message to a large group of people.

So do you actually have gay prides/marches in Serbia now? I'm asking cause once I've seen a footage (it was part of an art installation) from the first (?) gay pride in Belgrad which participants were basically beaten up by the hooligans and police did almost nothing to help them. It was quite disturbing...

That was the first gay pride in 2001. Unfortunately, it was really badly organized and without police protection. The next one was supposed to be held in 2009, but was cancelled in the last moment because the police couldn't "guarantee the safety of the participants". In 2010, it was finally held. There were big riots, but the police protection was top notch and the march itself went on without any problems. But in the next two years it was again cancelled for the same reason as the first time.
It's always the same scenario, some extremist group threatens to nuke Belgrade if the event takes place, and then the police say they're powerless to stop it. Of course, those terrorist threats are never further investigated.
It is infuriating.

that is not the true definition of democracy but of "tyranny of the majority", and one of the reasons why there is separation of powers in true democracies, something that seems to be lacking in Russia, unfortunately...

That is one of the worst definitions of democracy I have ever read.
