There's only two possible options here...
1. He is a huge sleaze and attention whore who was trying to drum up publicity to win the Heisman Trophy.
2. He is gay and so deep in the closet that he's practically in Narnia.
I lean towards option 1, which is kind of understandable in a Machiavellian sort of way.
