Yeah. Shame really. I think it's a bit unfair to say that he can't be called the GOAT without winning the world cup. He should be in the GOAT discussion at least despite not winning the world cup. His achievements/records are massive already. Being the best player in the world for 4 years in a row is harder than winning a world cup imo.

Well he has not even come close to winning a big team event yet. He could have been in 2006 final if the coach had not tried to be too clever. In the last WC, his coach thought he could win by playing four strikers and one ball winner, even then Mascherano almost managed to take on the German midfield by himself. Messi is unlucky to have to be compared with others, but Maradona proved what is real greatness by making two finals where he was basically carrying the team.
