Hard to pick just one player as the best of 2012 but I do agree that Sinclair is definitely up there, she deserved to be in the final 3 and performed much better than Wambach last year, as did Alex Morgan for that matter.

The general consensus is that Morgan has plenty of years to win this award, Marta has already won plenty and an aging Abby hadn't won at all until now. Sentimental votes, perhaps.

This happens sometimes in gymnastics too. It's not that rare in the sports world I would think. Uchimura the top male is 5'3 1/2, the top female (or the top female in 2010 when Uchimura was the top male as well) Mustafina is 5'4. Even in tennis players like Venus, Davenport, etc were taller than contemporary male players like Hewitt.

This is also true in Olympic diving (platform, 3 meter, etc) where Laura Wilkinson is 5'7" while some of the best mens divers such as Chen Roulin is 5'2", Luo Yotung is 5'5", and Yahel Castillo is 5'5".
