Re: The Day Venus And/Or Serena Retires......
Started watching tennis summer of 2000. Venus def. Hingis wimbledon QF . I was 13 y/o then......
The only reason I watch tennis is because of Venus, Serena, and Nadal and.... They will all probably retire at around the same time

It will be a sad day for the sport. It always is when great champions call it a day, and anyone who says otherwise, are clearly not fans of the sport.

Re: The Day Venus And/Or Serena Retires......
Mixed emotions. I'd obviously be sad and I don't think tennis will ever be the same again but they've left me and their fans with an incredible bank of memories. There were also times I wasn't even sure Serena would get back to playing tennis again so I'm almost treating everything now as a bonus.

So, does Usain Bolt spoil sprinting then? If you remove Bolt from the scene, you might get an exciting 100m race between 3-4 9.8sec guys but the quality of the contest would be compromised without him, just as Wimbledon would be without Serena.

I learned to play because of them I will never forget them but tennis won't be the same. This generation really spoiled us (Federer, Nadal, Venus, Serena, Sharapova, Djokovic, the Bryans, Paes)

I will certainly miss Serena when she retires. With her comeback she has raised the bar for the current generation. By doing that she'll make those players who accept this challenge ,by working harder on their own game, better as well.

The way Venus/Serena retires tennis will lose one of the great ambassadors of this sport, it surely will be a sad day for tennis.

With all due respect, I disagree. Sure, it's frustrating when she gives our faves a beating. But sports would be a lot less attractive when athletes would retire just because the're too good. Another poster has already mentionned Usain Bolt. No soccer fan will say, "for crying out loud, there we have that pain in the ass Messi again with his 85 (or whatever) goals per season", even though I'm sure that Real supporters must have their belly full of him at this point. Boxing fans don't buy Floyd Mayweather's fights because they think he might lose but because they want to see boxing at it's finest, and he gives them that. Tennis fans have always regretted that Bjorn Borg retired so early and it would have been a huge body blow for the sport if Federer had retired in, say, 2007 because he was "just too good." Same is true when it comes to Serena.
During the Wozniacki years everyone (except for me, you and a few others ) complained about the lack of a clear ranking order in womens tennis. Now there is one. Serena leads the field, Vika and Masha are fellow greats who do well both on the ranking list and in the slams and other big events while most still consider Kvitova a pre-tournament co-favorite at the slams as well. In short, we sorta have a womens version of "the big four" like on the mens tour. But while there is a clear ranking order, the situation on the womens side is arguably even more interesting than on the mens since there are a number of players - greats and almost greats so to speak that are more likely to cause an upset.
And don't give up hope so quickly. Nobody, not even Serena is invincible. Vika came very close to beating her in the USO final. Imagine how proud you'd be if she'd finally be able to get a win over her or if she would be able to win a slam or a YEC with Serena in the draw. NOBODY would be able to take anything away from her and say that she only won because Serena didn't play. I know that's a lame argument anyway, but well, you know how it goes....
