Top junior, first U.S. girl in 30 years

Taylor Townsend became the first American girl in 30 years to finish No. 1 in the year-end world junior rankings.
The 16-year-old lost to seventh-seeded Ana Konjuh of Croatia 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 Saturday in the semifinals of the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships. But she clinched the top ranking when No. 3 Katerina Siniakova lost in the Orange Bowl doubles quarterfinals.
Gretchen Rush was the last American girl to end the year as ITF world junior singles champion in 1982.
Townsend of Stockbridge, Ga., trains with U.S. Tennis Association national coach Kathy Rinaldi at the player development center in Boca Raton, Fla.
Townsend won the 2012 Australian Open singles and doubles titles, along with doubles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open.
She plans to turn pro in 2013.

I was shocked when I read she hadn't made a final since April though.

The junior careers are usually a joke, no wonder the last 58282 junior GS champions are all different, they simply don't wanna grind their bodies down for their real tennis careers.

For me way better news for Americans is fact that worlds best ranked girl which is born in 1992 or latter is Christina McHale, and best ranked girl which is born in 1993 or latter is Sloane Stephens.

Juniors aren't relevant anymore.
The reason there's been 364373473 different winners is that no girl take it seriously once she won a Slam.
Still, a great story to tell the grandkids.

A lot of pressure on her this last year after the AO win, especially from the USTA.
She still has a lot to learn in the sport and plenty of time.
I look forward to seeing her on the WTA tour once she's had some seasoning.
