Seriously, Maria and Vika reached both 9 finals in 2012, do you really think it was only due to the draw being weak 9 times  give credit where it's due they were clearly above most of players if not all.

I don't think a BYE is needed for the first event of the year.
They are just giving the top 2 seeds some breadth to face Serena and not bomb out R32.

Singles winner gets US$110K.
Just for FYI and to see how overrated are doubles these days, winning the doubles title will get each player of the team more money than reaching the singles quarterfinals

The BYEs are totally unnecessary and actually could play a trick on Vikaria & Maria since the draw will be packed and they will have less time to adapt.
