I've never been a big fan of so-called peak threads because every player is bound to have once upon a time played a terrific match and if you want to use that as a basis for who's best you can prove virtually anything. Besides, even the best players only on very rare occasions play their absolute invincible best. How good you play on most days is much more important for having a successful career than how great you play every now and then.

And in the case of the Sharapova peak threads many of them are probably just an excuse to have a go at her anyway.

Really the PEAK argument doesn't work. Because most top players have shown a peak level that is simply unplayable for anyone. If one is playing at their peak then normally the other shouldn't be able to.

I suppose it could work if it was done surface by surface. But the threads are mostly just bait ones looking for the definitive 'wins each and every time' answer which would only be the case in a few matchups.

It is confusing because with the peak argument you can prove anything. Player A may beat player B twenty times in a row and have a far more successful career, but if you're a fan of player B you can always argue that ten years ago she had that one match in Indian Wells where she played at a higher level than player A ever did. So what? Player A is still the better player.

Not as far as I can remember.

I think it was supposed to have been pretty bad in 2005. It was still bad in 2006 but the fan base itself was respected.

A lot of it probably has to do with her returning to the very top this year but I'm sure things will calm down in 2013.
