Re: WTA Announces 2012 Player Award Nominees
(1) Serena Williams
(2) Venus Williams
(3) Angelique Kerber (she has shown quite a consistency throughout the year though, thus backing up her 2011 US Open SF appearance)
(4) Torn up between Heather Watson or Laura Robson
(5) Sara Errani/Roberta Vinci

Right so how can Kerber's "improvement" whereas, in actuality, it's not an improvement since she made USO SF .... compare to Errani's breakout season? Kerber already broke out in 2011.
Errani is the improved award winner.

Well, Kerber backed up her USO SF appearance with a consistent 2012, ending the year in the top 5, and a slew of "firsts" (first titles (one is Premier), first Premier 5 level final, first quarterfinals and semifinals here and there in big tourneys, some upsets against the big girls, etc). That is certainly improvement.
Errani certainly has had her improvement as well though and she can also win the award easily, especially if her doubles run this year is counted too. It just depends on how the committee decides.
But in my personal opinion, Kerber has improved more than Errani, simply based on her relatively more consistent run throughout the year. I personally prefer 'backing-up the breakout' than the 'breakout' itself

Re: WTA Announces 2012 Player Award Nominees
If Serena doesn't win POY then the WTA is showing that they are biased to their rankings.

This, really.
I'm totally unbiased of course. But Sara's breakthrough and rise in the rankings has been so much more surprising than Kerbers. And her improvement has been much larger. She won 40 places in singles AND 25 places in doubles.
For me:
1) WTA's Player of the Year: Serena Williams (should be a lock)
2) Comeback Player of the Year: Yaroslava Shvedova (but I think Venus will get it)
3) Most Improved Player of the Year: Sara Errani (see above)
4) Newcomer of the Year: Heather Watson (higher ranked than Robson, and unlike Stephens she won a title. Bertens doesn't stand a chance here, unfortunately)
5) Team of the Year (doubles): Errani/Vinci (2 Slam1, 1 final)
