Re: News confirmed: No tennis on Eurosport in 2013 outside the slams

long interview of the president of MCS on french tv + website updated

he confirmed WTA coverage for 2013 until 2016 and gave a few pieces of info

that's the tournament covered by MCS:
Hopman Cup, Brisbane, Sydney, Doha, Dubai, IW, Miami, Charleston, Madrid, Rome, Strasbourg, Eastbourne, Stanford, Carlsbad, Toronto, Cincinnati, New Haven, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow, WTA Championships, Tournament of Champions

from what he said, I deduced that Eurosport has rights for:
Paris Indoors, Copenhagen, Stuttgart, Brussels, Birmingham, Linz & Lux

MCS will have 6 ATP tournaments, Eurosport 3 of them (Doha, London & Dusseldorf)

he talked about 2014 which will have major changes in calendar in both WTA & ATP World Tours, with a longer grass season it seems, with the possiblity to upgrade Birmingham and therefore they'll have priority for coverage over Eurosport.

I can't see how Eurosport has any of those rights...

Any update about the countries covered by MCS? If they are going to change or not?

The bolded ones are a bit confusing. Official news were that WTA/Perform want to sell the full 22 Premier Tournament Package, so why the Paris/Stuttgart/Brussels is not included for MCS?
Just a bit weird to me.

They probably wanted to keep the biggest premiers but with New Haven and Stanford not on ES list they must only have been allowed European ones.

but why would WTA sell 1-2 tournaments alone when they planned to sell the full package?

Although there was the "domestic TV rights" in past years, so even if Eurosport had exclusive rights and covered every Premier tournaments, a domestic TV channel could buy the rights too (BBC - Eastbourne, Supertennis - Rome, etc.)
That could mean french Eurosport (or any domestic channel) can buy rights & show Paris in France only, belgian Eurosport show Brussels in Belgium, etc...
But its unclear if this will continue.

Re: News confirmed: No tennis on Eurosport in 2013 outside the slams

Honestly I don't know although when it came out that WTA were to move from ES, wasn't it stated that they would still have Premiers? Although clearly they don't. The whole situation is just an epic mess.

BT Vision
From scanning through this thread I know that one member is adamant it's a done deal for BT Vision and that others are concerned this would restrict viewing to those with a BT Vision box.

With their recent acquisition of Premier League football and Aviva Premiership rugby it's unthinkable that they would restrict their nascent sports channel to their own platform. They're paying the Premier League £9 per match for every subscriber they already have and that's before they've started actually selling subs to the new channel.

The truth is they need to roll the channel out to as many platforms as possible for it to make economic sense, so expect it to be available on Sky and Virgin for around £10 per month. It's also unlikely that at a time when the WTA is trying to expand the reach of the sport they would restrict it to such a small audience as BT Vision's platform offers.

There is one significant concern that comes with BT Vision showing WTA matches - Aviva Premiership match times often clash with WTA semi-finals and finals. A big problem when you only have one channel. Most of their football matches are Saturday lunchtimes, so that's not such an issue.

Incidentally, someone queried who the hell has BT Vision. It's mostly people in flats who can't get Sky or Virgin.

Sky Sports
While this would reduce access to people with Sky Sports subscriptions, there's little doubt that Sky would do a great job. In particular they have they the advantage of multiple channels and red button functionality, a definite advantage given many tourneys will have two televised courts next year, something that would be wasted on BT Vision.

Someone suggested that Sky wouldn't touch WTA because of their ATP rights. I don't buy this argument. The question for Sky is whether they believe adding WTA to their profile will get more people watching Sky Sports and how much of the cost can be offset by advertising. I think it's a borderline case and they might be tempted to swallow a loss on them if it prevented someone else from having them.

ESPN
With the loss of the rugby and the football, they're desperate for new sports to add to their portfolio, unless of course they decide it's just not worth carrying on without them. These were probably the most expensive rights they held, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility they might ditch their subscription model altogether and take the Eurosport route - something which would appeal to the WTA in terms of reach.

One thing we do know is that they definitely have an interest in tennis after picking up various peripheral events this year and I'm pretty sure they would jump at the chance to take the WTA altogether if the price was right.

They could probably do decent coverage, in HD, with ESPN Classics a useful backup channel to show either a second court or centre court if another event takes precedence on the main channel.

Other options
I really can't see beyond the above options. ITV dipped its toe into tennis this year but I can't imagine them re-working their schedules for the huge screen time needed to cover the sport. The BBC doesn't have room for it, Virgin doesn't have a sports channel and other satellite/cable players lack the resources.

The doomsday scenario is that nobody takes the rights, in which case we'll all just have to subscribe to TennisTV.com.

One thing's for sure. We'll be able to watch WTA next year. The only question is how much we'll have to pay.
I really think the best case scenario for UK is Sky Sports. You say that would reduce access to people with Sky Sports subscriptions. But is that not already the case for Eurosport anyway? My hope is Sky Sports picking up on the rise of Laura and Heather leads to them picking the rights up. The rights probably cost peanuts compared to the sort of money Sky Sports normally throw around anyway. If Sky Sports were to get the rights, you'd finally get proper multi-court coverage of events (rather than the normal one). The best case you'd get with Sky Sports is a Sky Sports Tennis channel like the Formula 1 has. This is on top of the fact that Sky Sports tends to have the best commentators for tennis (on the whole, I know there are a couple of duds).

The problem with the other 2 is a massive lack of access, and doubts how they would be used. There are many many more people with Sky Sports as opposed to ESPN and BT Vision. And also the sports that those two currently have (football, rugby etc.) is all on the weekends filling their schedules, and they only have one channel (2 if you count ESPN Classic). So you just know if the tennis ends on one of these two you will end up with tape delayed semi finals and finals and the like which sucks. I have heard the stuff about it going to BT Vision, and I really hope not for the reasons above.

I am almost certain someone will take the rights anyway so the doomsday scenario will never happen. Besides in the UK (not sure about other countries) you can get nearly the entire WTA and ATP schedules and all the grand slams for effectively free with Bet365 (yes you have to deposit, but you can just deposit 50.01, and then withdraw 50 a couple of days later leaving your balance at 0.01, and you get access to like nearly every televised tennis match in the year).

Which brings me to my next point - does anyone know with this better coverage stuff, if the WTA streams will be produced better. Eg. on ATP you get streams with commentary even in the 250s. In WTA right now even at some of the bigger events the raw streams don't come with commentary. Does anyone know if WTA plan to sharpen up this area of production next year (the commentary is often what keeps me awake on some of the middle of the night events!).

ES probably has ATP Eastbourne too? I bet they will have some clay events during April-May.

At this point I'm actually quite surprised if the WTA manages to sell the Premier events as a package. It's November and there are still no clear plans for next season? It's obvious this was supposed to be ready and to be announced at Istanbul, but it was just a farce.

If it's really true that bigger WTA events get smaller tv-audiences than ATP 250 events, then they are in deep s**t. No way are they gonna get good value for their so called product. It will end up at some obscure tv-channel viewed by 0,005%.

Re: News confirmed: No tennis on Eurosport in 2013 outside the slams

There's more emerging about what's happening with BT in the UK:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...oking-for.html
http://www.c21media.net/archives/90273

Two main things:

1) It sounds pretty likely that they've got the WTA rights:
Quote:
Other sports are being sought – indeed, announcement of another deal is imminent, “certainly before Christmas”, Watson reveals. Could it be cricket, or Formula 1? “Those rights are tied up for years to come,” says Watson. He says he can’t reveal what’s coming because “the ink isn’t dry on the contract yet”. However, market rumour suggests that tennis could be the next sport in the BT stable.
2) They're launching two sports channels next year and it seems that you'll be able to subscribe to them through Sky as well so it's not just limited to people with BT Vision:
Quote:
BT intends to launch its new sports channel on Sky as well, adopting the same model Setanta Sports used several years ago whereby Sky carries the channel but subscribers deal directly with the owner.

Where do you get the idea they're launching two sports channels?
