Oh cool, nobody seems to have mentioned it, but on account of winning last night, Maria has secured YE#2, regardless of what Serena does in this event/to her. Also, I believe the door could potentially be open for her to snatch #1, contrary to what others have said.

To do so, Maria would need to win the tournament unbeaten, which would give her 1500 points. In addition, she needs Li to eliminate Azarenka tomorrow, meaning Maria would claim #1 by the narrowest of margins. It won't happen, but it's still there I think!

Re: YEC 2012 iSTANBUL Mission: Beat Vika/Rena, humiliate Haga and win the title.

I actually re-watched most of the last set of last night's match before -- Maria actually played quite well imo (apart from that awful service game she played at 3-2 to give away the break). Her backhand was in Stuttgart final form. Like someone else said, I think we were just too tense to realise it was good quality

Hopefully tomorrow she really gets hold of Stosur's serve, because that will be good practice for Serena's 2nd serve. As awesome as Serena's 1st serve is, her 2nd really is overrated - it's usually these days just a Stosur-style kicker predictably into the middle of the box, but Maria has been inexcusably bad at returning it in her latest matches against Serena. I have to admit, much as I like Vika, I kind of hope she doesn't make the semis -- although I really do think Maria could beat either Serena or Vika here, to beat both of them she'd have to play 2 perfect matches in a row, and I don't know if she can do that One perfect match she can do, potentially.

By saving those match points against Kerber, she killed our hopes and made sure to reach the semis iMO. Maria will have to battle to get this title, I'm not sure she will beat Vika in SF but she can give her a tough match as for Serena in the final if Maria beats Vika just whatever.

Re: YEC 2012 iSTANBUL Mission: Beat Vika/Rena, humiliate Haga and win the title.

Tomorrow's OOP:

Maria vs Sam
Aga vs Sara
Vika vs Li

So she'll play the first match. Well, that's good because it'll give her more time to rest for the semi on Sat.

I bet she's on first because she kicked up a fuss behind the scenes about playing til 2am

Not happy though, I won't be in 'til 5. Do I hope that Maria struggles and the match becomes an epic 3-setter just so I can see some of it?

Re: YEC 2012 iSTANBUL Mission: Beat Vika/Rena, humiliate Haga and win the title.

If errani beats sammy tonight does that put sammy out of the running completely?
And, if masha beats sammy tomorrow does she top the white group?

masha beats sam: 3-0
masha loses sam: 2-1

aga beats errani: 2-1
aga loses errani: 1-2

errani beats sam: 1-1
errani loses sam: 0-2

sam beats errani: 1-0
sam loses errani: 0-1

so basically masha either will qualify tomorrow first or second in her group based on aga vs errani and a win/loss over sam

wow Sam was so disappointing today, don't know if she'll recover tomorrow to beat Maria.

Now Sharapova has a much greater chance to go 3-0.

Re: YEC 2012 iSTANBUL Mission: Beat Vika/Rena, humiliate Haga and win the title.

I'm not good at the math - so I'm asking all of you wise guys and girls:

a) I know that Masha is in the semis but is it determined yet who the #1 of the White group is or are there still some "ifs" and isn't it true that Masha needs to end top of her group to avoid Williams in the semis

b) Serena Williams ended top of her group - but the #2 is not determined yet - Kerber is out and it's between Na and Victoria - If Na wins - is Masha to be the #1 in the rankings by reaching the semis or does she at least have to reach the final?

Tanks in advance

Re: YEC 2012 iSTANBUL Mission: Beat Vika/Rena, humiliate Haga and win the title.

Maria is surely the #1 in her group right now, even if Aga or Sara wins in straight, or Maria loses in straight to Sam tomorrow, she'll still be the #1 of the White Group.

And Serena is definitely the #1 of the Red Group. So Maria will play either Li or Vika in the semi. If Li wins tomorrow against Vika, Maria will still stand a chance to be the No.1 by the end of the season if she wins the tournament, and that means beating Serena in the final..

Maria will not face Serena in the SF's.
To become number one, Azarenka needs to lose, Maria needs to beat Stosur, and win the tournament.
