Weren't all the 1950s draw easier by today's standards? Only Fry defeated Gibson for her Australian, so Mickey Mouse or not, Fry won the '57 Australian by denying Althea Gibson her career slam and was a top player of the '50s. A win over Gibson is far more impressive than a win over Ivanovic. Fry has had a better career than Sharapova even keeping doubles out of it, and won three singles slams in a row. Maria hasn't even made 3 finals in a row. And given Maria's lackluster results at Wimbledon since her 2004 victory, the switch from grass to hard at the US Open and the Australian helped her a lot than keeping 3/4 grass did for Fry.
