Sorry, but when it cames to rock music, USA beats the Europe, hands down. It should be "american songs that Europe has no idea about" instead...

Totally disagree. And I love a great deal of underground alternative American music (Olivia Tremor Control, Half Japanese, Daniel Johnston, Yo La Tengo) as well as all the classic 1960s bands and songwriters like The Byrds, Bob Dylan, The Fugs, The 13th Floor Elevators, Frank Zappa, The Troggs, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, MC5, the list really is pretty endless. Oh yeah, and there's all the great punk bands like The Ramones, The Cramps, The B-52s, Pere Ubu and so on. Yeah, American music at it's best is pretty outstanding.
But even so, these days nothing gets me going more than some really completely bonkers crazed psychedelic 1960s French pop. Infact, 1960s French pop in general is just so full of humour, subversiveness, imagination, irony and playfulness that I just can't get enough of it.
And of course there's the greatest rock band of all time....The Kinks, who are of course from my hometown of London. So I would say the best of Europe, especially that of the UK and France, (although there's also some pretty wonderful music from Italy, Belgium and several other contries too) easily holds it's own against the best American music. Even some of the best 1960s Polish music is pretty good.
Well, I guess I can't make a post like this without giving a few examples of the kind of music I'm talking about so here we go, a few examples of 1960s French pop at it's very best....
Dig this...
okay and for good measure a song by that most wonderful of all bands The Kinks...

Currently yeah. But if you're including GB in Europe that's not always so. From classic rock through punk GB more than held their own. In fact, I'd say they win.
