all this plus having several injuries that have obviously affected her game.
People should leave her alone a bit,at least until next year, but I agree that fitness is a big issue
for her that she´ll have to sort out sooner or later
.
Unfortunately, I think it's more than just that.

Last year, Petra's fitness was fine, getting to balls, and hitting some wicked, indescribable shots on the run with regularity. This year, not so much (except in Montreal), and a bit in Cincinnati.

I'm not sure how much strategy, career advice, strategic vision and motivation that Petra gets from her current team. It's noteworthy, that Petra has won about 5 of her 9 career titles, with out her coach. I think he's good for teaching her tennis shots. But the juries still out on his tactical game planning, and/or if Petra even listens to him when he does.

In addition, her team had certainly made some pre-season and in season blunders--aiding to injury, sickness and time off the field/training during 2012.

And despite the repeated interest and overtures from folks like Navratilova, Petra continues to keep her team very small. Currently, she has no strategic advisors or a fitness coach (though I'm sure she'll hire one soon).

Shoot, even 19 year old Sloane Stevens is smart enough to use Serena as an advisor, a player she's currently competing against. Sloane ain't no fool. It's Kotyza and Katie (the PR Lady--who's a good step), as far I know now.

Petra could use career, strategic, tennis management advice from someone like a Navratilova who's been there. As good as a teaching coach Kotyza may be, he just can't duplicate that experience, high standards and respect. Petra's a laid back type off the court, who can be a fierce competitor on the court. But so much preparation is done off the court, before you actually play. You gotta believe and trust, even when you don't have your best stuff.

I say all this, cause I'm not sure how much Petra is actually motivated or takes this seriously at the moment. She could benefit from solid team. Sometimes I wonder why she doesn't call, text, e-mail or ask Martina for more advice (Martina politely complains about Petra's lack of outreach--every so often on Tennis Channel), is because Petra's not ready to live up to those standards/expectation or let Martina down--if she won't/can't.

Petra's got to realize she's in the big leagues now. And Serena, Martha, Aza, Aga and Kerber, just upped the ante.

Maybe it's all a lot to take in for her (remember Petra didn't play top juniors or travel a lot--early in her career and just entered the top 10 last year), post 2011. So we'll see?

Hopefully for Petra, she'll get acclimated to all this, and start to take her career, her body, her planning, her tennis, her goals and team seriously. Cause I want to see some more of that breathtaking, all court, winning tennis that she can produce. If she does, we all win; even non-fans or haters.

We'll see?

Is Serena not Sloane's WTA "mentor" thing that they do with young players. Like old players are assigned younger ones to advise on some level.

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

It's her game and it's patchy and inconsistent. Once she gets a little more consistent (like she did in Toronto and New Haven) she will beat better opponents and be back to dominance. In the mean while she's still ranked 5 and is safely into the YEC as defending champion so I don't see what there is to worry about... Should have played Linz though in my opinion.

Azarenka wanted to play so she wasn't allowed.

I think Istanbul will be a very telling tournament as far as Petra's 2013 are concerned. She needs to beat one or two top players (Serena, Vika, or Maria) to get the belief back that she has the ability to do so. Istanbul should be as good a court as any to do so.

Agreed.

But at least she's smart, courageous enough to call.

Martina basically/politely pleads with Petra to call on the air.

Elders, will always help young people, when they see they really want the assistance. That's life (in and outside of tennis). You know, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. And Petra could use a Martina at this stage of her career, more so than Sloane Stevens does. So I applaud Sloane, though I know what you meant. It's either that (call Martina) or set up a top notch, professional team for herself. Kotyza and a future fitness coach may not be enough.

We can look at this two ways. It's a natural progression from where Petra came from to where she is now (i.e. and adjustment period). Or you can look at it and say, Petra's at a cross roads (no fitness coach, questionable strategy during close, important losses this year, no career direction from respected players, no specialist brought in, etc), for a top 5 player with a #1 game.?

We'll see?

Thanks (if you're serious).

I almost feel like Rafa--when he ends his sentences with "no".

I guess its cause, I never claim to know everything, like so many on TF do.

Of course she has the game, as do many other professional, including, Sam Stosur, Ana VIP, JJ.
Former French player Cedric Pioline had the game to beat anyone on the ATP, but he could not just put together.

There is something that separate those players from the true top players. The top players know how to bring all, or some of those elements, at an optimum level just enought to win a match.
Petra has rarely been able to do that.
Often, when she wins, she has obliterated the opponents, setting high expectation from her admirers and tennis writers, who embraced her very early as a potential unstopable player.
For Petra, in order to win, ALL of the condition have to be at optimum level. Environment, court condition, weather, her mental state, continent, etc... This is highly unrealistic.
A little adversity stemming from those elements easily put a wrench in Petra ability to pull of a win.

It means, very often, when she has been presented with a challenge, she has failed to rise to the occasion. The fire, resourecfullness are lacking.
THIS, is also what separates Petra from the Vika, Maria and Serena of the WTA.
Talent alone is not enough, which explains why genius kids do not necessarily turn inot succesfful adults in their fields.

I am afraid a year ago, it was the combination of novelty and raw talent.
Novelty has worn off because other players have learned to play her.
They have come to expect her to become mentally frail and self destruct ( as the match goes on) if and when the opponent challenges her.

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

45-15 this year. 3-6 vs top 10 before today. 6-3 vs 11-15. Kvitova fans should take solace that she seems to be early Sharapova. Sharapova won her slams in 04, 06 and 08, but in 05 and 07 would reach a bunch of semi's and peak at Birmingham. Petra's two peaks were the US Open swing, and the Sydney, AO, Fed Cup run real early. Unlike Wozniacki, she had what could be considered an off year, but stayed in the top 10.

One more note: Kvitova, including Fed Cup actually played 2 more tournaments last season.
