Re: Australian Open raises prize money by 4 million dollars

1st round exit in a grandslam is a great achievement for a pro tennis player ranked outside 100.....just because one or two lucky ones runaway with 30k or 40k dollars without much effort at every slam, it doesn't mean other 60 odd players don't deserve it......they have rightfully earned their rd 1 spots well and truly by playing well over a calender year......

winners, runners up and semis prize money should be decreased significantly(as they get plenty of sponsors cash anyway) and donated to futures and challenger level tournaments......there are 1000s of players dedicating their lives to tennis and yet can't seem to make decent living out of it......increasing futures and challengers prize money would only propel more youngsters taking to the sport as decent cash looms next to their first big effort towards becoming a pro......talented middleclass might then start taking tennis seriously and tennis will start spreading......all this talk leads to my thread "why tennis has been a....?"......

And slams are one of the few tournamentswith the cash to reward these people for their lifetime of hard work. The champion already becomes a millionaire in two weeks, how much more of disparity do we want?

Tennis is trying to become a more progressive sport, not even more fiscally elitist.
come on, its not fair you get the same money by losing a R1 on a grand slam than by winning a MM. its crazy

Thats because a major makes a ton of money. A challenger or a Tier IV dont make a lot of money.
Majors and mandatories are the opportunity for players ranked about 70-120 to have a chance at real money.
I think $20,000 should be for 1st round of qualies, then $30k, $40k. And 1st round main draw 50k. 2nd round 75k, 3rd 100k.
These majors can easily afford that

too much money. the only thing i agree is they should increase the prize money in the qualies of slams, which, at least in mens side, its quite poor(compared to R1 loss)

Winning a MM is worth $37,000. First round losers got $20,000 at this year's AO. Second round losers got $33,300.

^ Are you insane? 50k for losing in 1st round? I mean, really?

I'm not sure, but I think this would be enough to take whole family to Australia to watch player's 1st round loss

yeah, and future and satellites dont make money at all
should they remove prize money from futures so winner gets 0 euros?

Remember, you still need to be good enough to be playing in the 1st round. How many "professional" tennis players in the world?

What is the actual net income from winning these Slams if, say...a player reside in Monaco?

I'd be tempted to reduce 1st rd money & give major increases to 2nd & 3rd rounds, & beyond. Reward players for performance, similar to golf.

It would help eliminate injured players turning up to a Slam event, playing a set and walking off to collect a $20K+ cheque.
Agree with Cahill
