Clay court players starring in Beijing???

If you looked at the results this week here in Beijing and did not know where it was, you would be forgiven for the tournament being held on red European clay, given the surprise packages appearing in the latter stages this week:

Carla Suarez Navarro - qf beating Kvitova and Jankovic
Romina Oprandi - qf beating Ivanovic
Lourdes Dominguez Lino - last 16, beating Vinci and almost Aga Radwanska
Polona Hercog - last 16, beating Makarova

I haven't seen any matches so wondered whether the surface was incredibly slow or something. One of these players reaching this stage of a tournament would be one thing, but all four and there is a pattern there...

Re: Clay court players starring in Beijing???

had Hercog not won Potoroz?

Oprandi has won indoor titles as well, Lino not sure, I think they get more Umff of the surface.

Re: Clay court players starring in Beijing???

These Asian events always come down to motivation, physical and mental fitness. That´s more important than being a ground specialist imho. That contributes to some upsets, although the likely QF isn´t really all that random.

Re: Clay court players starring in Beijing???

Suarez Navarro isn't really a claycourt specialist atall - the biggest win of her life came on hardcourts, over Venus at the AO09 (and when Venus was in VERY good form, seeing as she won the YEC in the tournament right before, and won Dubai in the very next tournament after that AO).

The other 3 are maybe closer to claycourt specialists, but it's probably just coincidence that they're all doing well. The Beijing surface is probably mid-paced by the standards of hardcourts these days - not as slow as the US Open was this year, not as fast as Tokyo last week.

these tournaments (asian swing) are a joke. Niculescu made the semis last year. This is unreal

The surface is quite fast so that doesn't explain it.

Perhaps fatigue is a factor; as in with an opposite sign. These four players have not been winning a whole lot over the summer, and none of them made it further than R2 in USOpen/Seoul/Tokyo.

Saying a tournament a joke is really disrespectful.
Typical Serena's fan
