Re: Australian Open raises prize money by 4 million dollars

That's ridiculous, I mean yes it's good that the prize money is increased and that it is for the early rounds and such but it's quite funny to see a player losing in easy straight sets on a small court getting paid 40K or more. Some of the men won't be happy tho as they were fighting to get more money than the women. *cough* tipsarevic/Simon *cough*

I applaud the Aussie Open for stepping up & fully support the players push for a larger share of revenue. But, not for 1st round exits.

I'd be tempted to reduce 1st rd money & give major increases to 2nd & 3rd rounds, & beyond. Reward players for performance, similar to golf.

It would help eliminate injured players turning up to a Slam event, playing a set and walking off to collect a $20K+ cheque.
how about the players who battled through three rounds of qualifying dickhead?

How much more are they getting next year for a 1st round exit? This year it was about $21,000. I think that's already alot, considering players only get 30k check for winning a MM tournament.

Reward similar to gold
Golf is fucking ridiculous in terms of how much money they get for doing jack shit and he wants tennis like that.

The ATP guys are greedy fucking pigs I can't believe they have the nerve in this global economy to demand more money

Yes I'd like to see increase in quali prize money and R2-R4 of MD, but not for losing R1.

meanwhile, challenger prize money will be the same for 10 years. too bad, tennis australia, too bad
tennis should stop being too much money for just a few players. challenger players are in a really bad situation as their prize money hasnt increased for AGES...

they must stop now, its too much money for going and just losing a match
end of it. plus some injured players dont withdrw and retire after some games to take the big prize money. too much money for just losing 1 match, sorry

Agreed that money for 1st round exits should be drastically reduced.

Prize money at slams has been increased every year. I'm guessing it will continue that way every year.

Tennis Australia is not an ITF event or organisation.

Some of you are making it sound like players losing in R1 don't try. They usually get outplayed, they are giving 100% and shouldn't be actively penalised and have prize drastically reduced for failing to take the win.

They have earned a spot in the draw in the first place by winning enough throughout the year to be ranked in or around the top 100 of what they do. That's quite impressive in itself. And slams are one of the few tournamentswith the cash to reward these people for their lifetime of hard work. The champion already becomes a millionaire in two weeks, how much more of disparity do we want?

Tennis is trying to become a more progressive sport, not even more fiscally elitist.
