The one and only 5th slam on the WTA Tour

5th Slam of the South American clay Bogota

The first clay court tournament of the year has given some of the most random WTA tournament winners in the last few years. Abandoned by their biggest star Flavia Pennetta lately, the organizers saw Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, who had never even won a big ITF, defeat fellow rookie Alexandra Panova in the final.

Seeds:
1. Erakovic 56
2. Dulgheru 61
3. Oprandi 63
4. Dokic 67
5. Dulko 69
6. Johansson 73
7. Dominguez Lino 82
8. Mayr-Achleitner 96

Last direct acceptance: Duque-Marino 192

Final: Arruabarrena-Vecino d. Panova 62 75

5th slam of Former Numbah One (!!!!!1111) Miss Sunshine Copenhagen

Maybe Caro is a slam winner after all? This year the Danish siren failed to shine in her home country, letting Angelique Kerber take the crown and prove to be the great player she said she was thanks to this huge achievement.

Seeds:
1. Wozniacki 6
2. Kerber 16
3. Jankovic 17
4. Niculescu 29
5. Kanepi 34
6. Barthel 36
7. Pervak 37
8. Arvidsson 54

Last direct acceptance: Robson 120

Final: Kerber d. Wozniacki 64 64

5th slam of Africa - dedicated to the Moroccan Monarchy - Fes

S.A.R. la Princesse Lalla Meryem has had some of the weakest fields on the Tour in all the tournaments held in her country. There was hope with Kuznetsova and Wickmayer in the draw this year, but both lived up to what we expected of them this year, i.e. not much. Dutchie qualifier Kiki Bertens came on top this time, defeating a drug addict to take her first big title.

Seeds:
1. Medina Garrigues 26
2. Kuznetsova 27
3. Cetkovska 30
4. Wickmayer 31
5. Halep 42
6. Scheepers 44
7. Zakopalova 47
8. Peer 55

Last direct acceptance: Rus 98

Final: Bertens d. Pous-Tio 75 60

5th slam of Alpine Goddesses Mayr & Burger Bad Gastein

With its move to the week before Wimbledon, Bad Gastein has lost a lot of interest from the players. The place where local celebrities Patty Mayr-Achleitner and Vonne Meusburger often shine in the cloudy and rainy Alps saw one of the most unexpected comebacks happen in 2012: Alizé Cornet pushed through handshake queen Yanina Wickmayer to take a long-awaited title. Slam, sorry. Cutie Mandy Minella also made the semis, for the whole male attendance's pleasure. Marta Domachowska entered main draw directly, for one of our most famous posters's pleasure as well.

Seeds:
1. Goerges 27
2. Wickmayer 35
3. Pervak 40
4. Suarez Navarro 46
5. Martic 50
6. Begu 59
7. Cornet 66
8. Larsson 80

Last direct acceptance: Domachowska 173

Final: Cornet d. Wickmayer 75 76(1)

5th slam of the BS & D (Burning Sun & Dizziness) Baku

All the girls fell like flies in Baku this year, suffering from the hotness in the middle of Eurasia. With its incredible crowds, crazy atmosphere and perfect position in the calendar, Baku sure deserves to be nominated among the slam candidates. After pushing her way to the final and resisting the heat, our friend Julia Cohen (maybe she was on drugs? looked alike on that Casablanca video here, for those who don't remember: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kar7bCn3mRw) unfortunately failed to close it out against Bojana Jovanovski.

Seeds:
1. Pervak 58
2. Panova 75
3. Minella 78
4. Hlavackova 88
5. Jovanovski 95
6. Bratchikova 99
7. Amanmuradova 101
8. Birnerova 108

Last direct acceptance: Savchuk 200

Final: Jovanovski d. Cohen 63 61

5th slam of all slams Tashkent

This one has to be a favourite. People keep laughing at it, seeing the weak fields it has gathered through the years. A perfect chance for young Donna Vekic, though very talented, to vulture the most points possible here by reaching the final. She fell to Romanian newcomer of the year 2011 and suddenly reborn Irina-Camelia Begu on the last hurdle.

Seeds:
1. Niculescu 33
2. U. Radwanska 43
3. Cornet 50
4. Rybarikova 66
5. Cadantu 68
6. Jovanovski 72
7. Panova 76
8. Voskoboeva 80

Last direct acceptance: Cepelova 137

Final: Begu d. Vekic 64 64

Where is Guangzhou? Or maybe this tournament was eliminated? (even NA MUG doesn't consider it as Slam)...

Re: The one and only 5th slam on the WTA Tour

Baku was effected by Olympics, Tashkent is great for seeking new talent.

Its either Bogota or Bad Gastien and I'd give Bad Gastien the edge, like Cornet was the champ ffs

Re: The one and only 5th slam on the WTA Tour

Bogota, of course.

1st WTA clay tournament of the year and if this is not reason enough to make this tournament a mess, the height is leading to DF galores and very random tournament winners.

The fact that this year's champion had more success on Hard lately then on the following clay season says it all.
