I don't think it's all because of her prior number one ranking, just look at Azarenka's off-court earnings compared to Wozniacki's. It's Caro's personality, people just like her and I think Azarenka's on-court attitude reflects on potential off-court endorsements.

Two words: Coke + Snickers, it has to happen...
Honestly though, I don't think anybody needs to feel sorry for her, she's making most of her money by doing what her job is - Playing tennis and being great at it.
I sure wish Caro would make less on endorsements and more on wins, as a fan I don't cheer for my players to get rich but to be successful.
With that being said, I have to wonder how up to date this list is. Vika has signed a bunch of deals lately, Citizen for example.

It seems that companies are reluctant to embrace Azarenka as the new No. 1 - regardless of her being an excellent player - and they're waiting for Serena to grab the top spot after Aussie Open.
It may sound cynical, but who will then care about the No.2 or No.3 ranked Ms. Azarenka, backed by an extremely small home market, not to mention the off-putting Vuvuzela sound she makes during every point?

Caroline probably does have a more attractive personality but I'm saying that these deals she made only after she got to number one. I would say Vika has a nice personality too it's just that her agent isn't aggressive enough and Serena/Maria both winning slams this year overshadowed her slam win/number one rank. Compared to Caroline, who basically dominated 2011 except for winning a slam. Vika did not make as much as she could have this year.

would be great to start a thread based on off court earnings in the year you win your first slam (have no idea how to access this information)

You have to consider the long-term effect, it takes time for this stuff to develop. Caro's 2012 earnings look good even though her season has been very poor, the hit from that will come in 2013.
For example, around Wimbledon there were talks about her closing a major contact extension with Adidas. It has gotten awfully quiet since then, her results don't really strengthen her position. Same with Turkish airlines, missing Istanbul will be a big blow for them.
She's helped by the fact that she's likable and she has a celebrity boyfriend but that won't keep her afloat forever, she has to deliver results again or her earnings will suffer next year. It just takes a while until current results can be seen in these numbers.

Yeah I know. That's why i said she probably won't be making as much next year(off court).

Re: Forbes:List Of The World's Highest-Paid Tennis Players 2012
The on, off-court breakdown is pretty interesting. I don't think there is anything that surprising here though. It always takes a few years for your off court earnings to be reflected from your results. The opposite is true too at the end of your career (eg. Roddick). Djokovic's, Murray's, Azarenka's off court earnings will likely massively increase in the next few years. If Wozniacki were not to get back to top 5 in say next 2 seasons you would probably see a big drop off in her off court earnings in a couple of years.
