Re: Donna Vekic

Actually I'm not sure about that (seeding). See, rules state deadline for entries into the main draw at six weeks prior to the tournament start, and three weeks for entering the qualies (4 weeks for grand slams qualies). And rankings from the deadline entry date are used to form the list of accepted players. This means that to enter the main draw (if I understand the rules correctly) Donna would have to apply 6 weeks before October 8th, in other words with her ranking as of August 27th, and her ranking on that date was #206. I hope that'll be enough for the main draw, but if it's not she can sign in for qualies with her current ranking (3 weeks before the tournament), which would probably make her the top seed of the qualie draw.

Of course, I could be wrong about some (or all) of this, but I don't see many other possibilities.

Great choice of tournament imo. Should be able to get some tough matches in.

And if you guys think that #121 sounds great, how about #118, which is Donna's position in the 2012 WTA Race

Paywalled article on Donna by Harman:
David Felgate’s Croatian prodigy rising fast.

Harman was tweeting Donna quite a bit last week.

I haven't read the article. Perhaps you could try tweeting Donna's one-time doubles partner, Charlotte Pearce, if you want to know what's in it.

Oh, you all knew that already 'cos Donna retweeted it. How about this one from Cavaday?

I have no idea in what sense Donna belongs to Cav, who's at Bromley, SFAIK. Has Donna relocated?

Re: Donna Vekic

It's inevitable that Great Britain are going to try and claim Donna as "one of their own"

And I can't get the article to open either. I think you have to pay to read it?

Re: Donna Vekic

Yup, article is obviously available only to subscribers, so I can't see it either.

And when it comes to this thing with Brits calling Donna one of their own, that might have something with her perfect spoken English, so they might just be mistaken Jokes aside, I'm willing to respect the fact that Donna is guided by a British coach, without whose help she might not get to where she is now, so I'd gladly call her a "Croatian-British project", as that's certainly not far from truth. I'm sure it's nothing serious on their part, just the fact that she's at home in London and is probably friends with many of their players. No harm in that

- I. Falconi
- A. Sevastova
- A. Amanmuradova

Well it could be, but I'd say highly unlikely. Since the main draw cut-off date is August 20th (when Donna was below #200) and that for qualies September 10th (around 180, I think), her only chance would be through a wild-card, as there are only 47 main draw and 28 quali direct acceptances.

Either the folks at Sportnet don't know what they're saying, or Donna's website hasn't been updated with this info, but after everything her fitness coach said during that Tashkent final coverage I'd bet on the former. Would be exciting to be wrong though

Re: Donna Vekic

Here's an interview from Glas Slavonije (Croatian newspaper, for those who don't know), and it says, among other things, that her next tournament is "a challenger in China", so unless the news of Beijing is something that happened in the past few hours, it's probably incorrect. So, here's the link for those of you who want to read, and below I'll list the most important facts from it in English.

http://www.glas-slavonije.hr/176741/...lim-uzeti--sve

- she'll spend a week in her hometown (where there was a press conference yesterday), then travel to London where she'll spend two weeks preparing for a challenger in China
- Fed cup captain Majoli says she is a great thing for women's tennis, as she has personality, confidence, talent, game, looks etc.
- about tears after the final; "Of course I was disappointed. After all, what kind of an athlete is OK with a defeat. I wanted that title."
- overall she is thrilled with how Tashkent played out for her; energy levels were not what caused the defeat, because Begu played a lot too; it says how Begu defeated Wozniacki and took a set off Azarenka recently; "She was the better one and deserved to win the title."
- "I'm not a person who wants to take it slow. I want it all right away. Doesn't matter that I'm only 16. It's not too early for the finals. Wouldn't even be for the title."
- Will there be more WTA's for her this year? "I don't know. That's on the coach to decide. I don't bother myself with that, I just practice and work hard for the next event."
- Starting the season at #392 she is now close to a place that leads into the MD of a GS. "Australia is far, there's a lot of time until Melbourne. But it's important that we're heading towards our goal."
- she started making money ($19k in Tashkent), but compared to annual costs (up to €200k), that's a drop in the sea; her father took bank loans a long time ago, they have an investor from England, there are Yonex and Nike in the picture now, as well as StarWing Sports management (after IMG and Lagardere)
- Felgate is working for her far below market price solely because of her talent and prospects

Oh, btw, the title reads: "Doesn't matter I'm only 16, I already want to take it all".

This surprises me a bit. Didn't she say in other interviews that she wanna' take it step by step?
