Also she withdrew from the challenger in Romania she was supposed to play next week, so she's probably heading to WTA Bastad instead . And then she isn't signed up for anything the following week, so she'll most likely be at WTA Baku . I think it's cool that she is trying WTA events, even though I think this will be enough for her for now and then she should go back to ITF tournaments
She didn't play in Bastad so hopefully she will be in Baku

Re: Following the Family Tradition: Maria Sakkari

European Junior Championships:
R128 vs. BYE
R64 d. Maleckova CZE (WTA #599) 6-2 6-2
R32 l. to (2) Bencic SUI (WTA #905) 4-6 2-6
And lost R1 doubles against Austria with Elpida Malamou

10K Turkey:
R1 d. Fournier CAN (#980) 6-0 6-1
R2 l. to (6) Hisami JPN (#444) 6-2 3-6 4-6

Still, some encouraging results and I expect her to rack up a lot of points on the Greek Fall ITF swing :bounce

Well these days there aren't many Greek players to choose from

And the next two weeks she will play 10Ks in Turkey where she will be seeded in both. Hopefully she can rack up some ranking points

She should go and win a 10K in Mexico like Anett or Donna

Re: Following the Family Tradition: Maria Sakkari

I found this article. It's in Greek but I translated it for you guys
http://www.espressonews.gr/default.a...d=1520884&pg=1

The article follows the title of this thread actually. As many of you know, Maria's mother was a great player who reached #43 in the WTA rankings, was a Greek Fed Cup player for years and reached the Olympic QFs as well as the third round of Roland Garros twice.

Maria said here that she is determined to sacrifice a lot for her tennis, such as holidays, times with friends, etc. (good to see that she has her priorities straight!). Maria said that she learned about her mother's tennis career when she was 11 years old. She went to her grandmother's house and saw her mother's trophy and played with it even though she didn't know what it was. Her mother didn't want her children to play professional tennis because she knew how hard it was. Maria then talked about how she is very proud of her mother and her achievements in her career.

Maria's mother was then interviewed and talked about how her family means everything to her. She said that when Maria told her she wanted to be a professional tennis player, she panicked because she knew how hard it was. She said she knows how hard it is for Maria because she also went through that. She said that everyone asks her if Maria is better than she was, but she said its very different because back then they played with wooden rackets, and she was better on clay but Maria is strong and fast (so she plays better on fast surfaces). She admits that back in her playing days sometimes she would skip practices, but Maria is very different because she always practices, wakes up early, runs, and watches her diet. She believes in Maria and thinks that she will be in the top 100 in 3 years. She said that her father (Maria's grandfather) was the first to recognize her talent (he is/was a tennis coach). She also said that the times have changed and now the Greek federation has no money so Maria's family has to cover all of her expenses, but they believe in her.

Pictures from the article of Maria and her mom:

Re: Following the Family Tradition: Maria Sakkari

Great to hear
Maria is 5th Seed at Gaziantep 10K, and after receiving a first round BYE she will now play Olga Brozda
I think that given their are more Greek Tournaments at the end of the year, she could be Top 500

Re: Following the Family Tradition: Maria Sakkari

She beat Brozda (#880, former #281) in straight sets and she now faces (1) Sezer in the quarterfinals
It will be tough, but she beat Sezer earlier in the season so hopefully she can give it her best and maybe beat her again

Also she's now 608 in the rankings, her career high . And yes, it would be great if she can do well this Fall in Greece . She has some points to defend but many to gain

EDIT-Actually she didn't get a first round bye, but her opponent retired in the first game of the match

Sadly she lost to Sezer 6-2 6-4, but hopefully she can build on this in Antalya next week and win her first tournament

EDIT: It turns out she is not playing Antalya this week but is playing next week This makes no sense IMO as she hasn't played that many matches recently and it is the same surface Anyway, good luck for the week of the 10th She is then playing again the week of the 17th I understand that if she played this week it would be a lot but unless she starts winning these tournaments, which I hope she does, I doubt she will get tired If she did she could pull out. I just don't want her to lose her momentum Anyway, hellas719, I was wondering if you would be in Greece when the Greek championships takes place as except for Eleni, she would be the clear favourite to win given Papamichail's recent results She seemed to fall apart after our fight at Fed Cup time

Finally, why is the first Heraklion tournament not at teh resort but is on Hard at Heraklion's tennis club and why is there Mytilini and Kalamata as well??? It seems I am becoming emotionally attached to these Greek Players and tournaments

Maria won her 1st Round in Antalya 6-2 6-2
She also made her first Pro Final last week before losing to Ana Bogdan in the final 6-3 6-2
Next week she will go up to a CH on the edge of the Top 500
She is also at a CH this week at 580

Sorry for the late reply. I was away for a week. I went to the USO and saw Kontaveit so my report will be posted in the USO forum soon

First, Maria beat Kazimova 6-3 6-1, not 0-0 ret. as the ITF site originally said

Second, she did play Antalya that week actually and reached the final! And the Greek Championships took place a few weeks ago and Maria did not participate (neither did Daniilidou, Papamichail, or Vogasari). Agni Stefanou won it all so she automatically gets a spot on the Fed Cup team. I guess Maria didn't play since she will probably get a spot anyways especially now that Gerasimou retired and Georgatou is taking a break and Papamichail is in a huge slump. And yes, although Papamichail's fall actually started a few weeks before then, but she is in her first QF of the year this week (albeit a 10K) but she is showing some signs I guess...

I'm not sure about the tournaments in Greece but I will check it out.
EDIT-I just checked. The tournament in Mytilini takes place every year and usually gets good crowds. There isn't much going on on the island of Lesvos in terms of sporting events so everyone there supports that tournament and they have many sponsors. The tournament in Kalamata is new, but they have hosted men's futures in the past. And I didn't notice that about the Heraklion tournament not being hosted at the resort, but there was a tournament at the same club last year that Papamichail won, and they have had some men's futures there too. But the other 3 scheduled futures for this year in Heraklion will all be at the resort. And they also have a club in Heraklion with 3 grass courts that hosted a men's future a while back. That would be pretty cool since grass courts are rare.

WD Maria! Well deserved final

And actually it wasn't her first final, as she reached the final of 10K Athens last year
Her progress is good though, she will get a new CHR again higher than 580 but not near top 500 as she has some points to defend. But I think as long as she keeps up her form she can go up as long as she stays focused, especially since she didn't play from the beginning of October until the middle of January

In that Antalya tournament where she reached the final, she had some good wins in straight sets over S.Hopper, Bhambri, (4)Al Nabhani, and N.Vajdova! Good work!

Unfortunately this week Maria lost in the 2nd round in Antalya 10K 1-6 3-6 against (3) Eraydin (#417). Hopefully she can rest up a little bit now. She is taking the next two weeks off, and then will play more tournaments in October! Good luck Maria!

Basak is a good player (has won 5 10Ks this year )
Hopefully Maria can play well in Heraklion
How did Anett play, BTW
