Re: Underhand serve as a second serve?

I have done it, in non competitive matches. But I don't think I would ever in a competitive match, or I definitely would warn my opponent beforehand. But I'm quite sportmanly, if you want to win by any means a la Martina, then do it.
However In some cases they can still prove troublesome, I have committed double faults trying to do a simple underhand serve.
My advice, practice your serves more.

Re: Underhand serve as a second serve?

Thanks for the response

Well i mean I'm not asking about using it as tactic to fool your opponents, rather in a scenario where you struggle with the consistency of your serve that tossing it underhand is a better/smarter thing to do than constantly DFing. I mean, would you rather play with someone that dfs 3 to 4 times a game versus someone that gets in a underhand serves? Atleast that way there would be actual rallies in the match, which I assume is the reason most play tennis

And yes your advice is very good

If I'm playing for fun, then rallies obviously are more fun. But a wins a win.

I did once serve 4 consecutive DF's safe to say next game, I underarmed my second serve.

Re: Underhand serve as a second serve?

I've done it in the past but only as a pisstaking kind of way, and even then most of the time my underhand serve got owned.

But really given you have a stable service motion as well as ball toss you shouldn't have that much trouble just pushing the serve in normally. I mean of course it'll be weak but it will do a lot more than an underhand serve for sure.

I have done it but I don’t think it has any negative impact on the opponent side.

Re: Underhand serve as a second serve?

I have had it done to me in social games. I haven't done it because a double fault is very rare for me. I use to play doubles with a couple and the man would do it all the time. I have to add he was 82 and had shoulder issues. If you don't have shoulder issues I hope you can get your serve together and do it the traditional way.

Strategically it can give you a different spin that is unexpected but once your opponent figures it out that serve is toast.
