Re: 2009 PAW Ranking Points Distribution
We should either double the 2008 points or split in half the 2009 points. Since all the numbers here are even (no qualies or 1st round losses ), I suggest we'll be smarter than WTA management (not a great deal to do) and choose the latter option. It would make calculations easier instead of this artificial doubling.

If opinions are varied about this then a poll should be made.

Re: 2009 PAW Ranking Points Distribution
The WTA has produced the ranking points for the five different status tournaments in the 2009 WTA calendar on page 196 of the 2009 WTA Rules book. Basically, they have more or less doubled the old rankings points for the GS, Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 events with exception being the Premier Mandatory events which carry slightly higher ranking points than the Premier 5.
The ranking points shown in post 1 are more or less the same ranking points we had last year for the GS, T1, T2 and T3 PAW tournaments but multiplied by 2 (hence why all are even numbers). If we decide to go with these new ranking points, then I could insert some odd numbers to provide a better taper of the points.
The question's we need to answer are:
1. Do we more or less stick with last years PAW ranking points and basically halve the ranking points in post 1? This will make FrOzons job a lot easier with respect to integrating the new WTA schedule into the entry ranking points tables.
2. Do we bite the bullet now and go with the new WTA ranking points system (i.e. double points as shown in post 1) for the start of 2009? If we go down this route, FrOzon will probably need to double all the entry rankings points scored in 2008 in order to give a smooth integration of the higher scoring points for 2009.
As I see it, if we go with option 1, at some point in the future, the PAW players will start to ask why the PAW scoring points are only half that of the WTA ranking points system and to make life easier, we would probably have to adopt the new ranking points eventually.
If we go with option 2, there is initially a lot of work for FrOzon to double up all the entry ranking points for 2008, but things should then run smoothly for 2009 and beyond.
Therefore, if FrOzon is happy carry out the work to update the ranking points, then my preference would be Option 2. Otherwise we go with option 1.
It would be good to get all managers/players opinions on this subject before the 2009 season starts.

Re: 2009 PAW Ranking Points Distribution
OK, as the 2009 season starts in less than 2 weeks, and there hasn't been much opinion on whether we should try to adopt the new 2009 WTA ranking points, I feel that we would be better to stick with a similar ranking points structure to 2008. For example:
Grand Slams Winner 1000 pts, 184 players, as per Grand Slams 2008.
Premier Mandatory Winner 500 pts, 128 players, as per Tier I 2008 but with marginally higher points.
Premier 5 Winner 430 pts, 96 players, as per Tier I 2008.
Premier Winner 275 pts, 80 players, as per Tier II 2008.
International Winner 140 pts, 64 players, as per Tier III 2008.
YEC's Winner 750 pts, 16 players, as per YEC's 2008.
By keeping with the 2008 ranking points structure, the current PAW entry rankings tables will not require any adjustment and this will make FrOzon's job much easier for the 2009 rankings tables.
The points tables in post #1 have now been modified and should be used for the 2009 PAW season.

Re: 2009 PAW Ranking Points Distribution
Thanks sdtoot for all your effort! Of course, sticking to the old point structure is the easiest way but "doubling" all old points and using a new (consistent) point structure would also be ok.

Re: Current PAW Ranking Points Distribution
Food for thought for next year:
I'm not sure whether the number of players in the tables was decided in the short period the cutoff system was in place, but 184 for Grand Slams makes no sense, it should be 128 at most (and perhaps we should even have two tables for majors and PM, of 96 and 128 players, and use one in correlation to the actual number of players that are playing, but that is a more radical change).
Anyway, sadly we rarely get to a 100 participants even in majors, and the result is that the last place finisher gets about 25 ranking points, equivalent to a top 10 finish in Int or a top half finish in a Premier, which is somewhat absurd.

I agree, this is something which the new PAW Board can discuss in the offseason and bring the scoring tables more into line with the current numbers of active PAW players.
