It´s tradition that January and August are "empty" months on ITF circuit. Last year there was even a week in August, where no above 10k tournaments were held (only such week during the year). There was supposed to be one more 50k in Spain (during the week of USO qualies), but as most of the other Spanish tournaments it was canceled. Most of the top 250 will be busy playing in America anyway.

Hardly surprising, considering that there will be Pironkova´s season ending championship later in the year

Re: 2012 ITF Calendar
Last year there were many tournaments in South America in November/December. This year they are not organized or just added later?

There are 3 consecutive $25K clay tournaments in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay in October/November

Yeah, but it's earlier than usual.

Re: 2012 ITF Calendar
What is crazy is the disappearance of the big clay tournaments post USO. 100K+H Saint Malo and 100K Sofia are downgraded to a mere $25K while $100K Biella and $50K+H Zagreb are just gone.

Biella was held in July, and was there replacing $100K Cuneo.
Telavi is like a nonsense now, which top 200 player will travel to Georgia now for just one week? At least in previous years they had Tbilisi and Batumi $25Ks. Now Tbilisi is gone and Batumi is just a $15K.

Re: 2012 ITF Calendar
^^
Yeah, better for Georgia was to have two 25k then 15k and 50k.

No, actually the tournaments in Heraklion are paid for by a hotel there. It's basically going to be the new Antalya. They tested it out in April and they said if it worked there would be more, so it worked
And the ones in Kalamata and Mytilini are being paid for by privates sponsors, so no Germans are paying for those either. But the Germans are paying their hotel bills on the beautiful Greek islands that they can't stay away from

Isn't the resort in Heraklion really expensive though (it's really big and beautiful) and why do they have so many tennis courts? How do you get there???

I have no idea about the pricing but the tournament takes place at the hotel from what I understand. There are many courts for the tournament (men going on at the same time too). The courts look pretty shitty though
And I guess you get there by plane. Heraklion has an international airport and Crete itself has 3 including the one in Heraklion. Or you could always book a ferry if you want to save money even though it would take much longer
And I think a lot of players like these tournaments because the venue is at the hotel so they don't have to travel to matches and they can relax on the beach or at the pool afterwards and there are many courts so they can practice whenever they want
