Flavia Pennetta of Italy (pictured) won her first tournament on the Who? What? Where? Tour in Vina del Mar beating some wildcard 6-0, 6-0; Anastasia Myskina of Russia 6-0, 1-6, 6-4; and Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-0, 6-1. We had some words with Flavia after the match.
Interviewer: Today you played Polona Hercog, who also won her first tournament last week and was vying for two today. What was the key to winning the match?
FP: Yes, Polona is playing very good tennis to this point. I was aware she hadn’t lost a match so I’m sorry I had to break her winning streak
But today maybe she wasn’t playing her best tennis especially in the first set so I made her play long points. It worked.
Anyway, I have to congratulate also for her strong week, she is a nice girl and her coach is as well so I hope for success for the rest of the year not just against me
Interviewer: How do you rate your performance this week in Vina Del Mar?
FP: Well it’s only the first weeks of the tour and it’s nice to have already won a title. I know when I win many titles in the future
this still will have much importance for me since it’s my first title. I will celebrate very much today but I’ll be prepared for next week so watch out
Interviewer: Will you be playing next week?
FP: Yes, I think in Mexico City… But I hear rumors that the event might be cancelled
Personally I think it should be kept, I really enjoy playing in Latin and South America and we have none many fans who come and watch. Also I think 5 or so players is enough. I think the organizers can give some wild cards to some local bagel upcoming players from the country like Melissa Torres Sandoval just like here
But if the tour says the event is cancelled, I will go and play in Cairo with the rest of the tour
Interviewer: Thanks for your time, Flavia and congratulations again.
FP: Thank you very much!
