Performance of top seed at Grand Slam singles tournaments

Here's the performance of top women's singles seeds at Wimbledon. The top seed has won the tournament 41 out of 79 attempts but only 3 times in the last 15 years. Martina Navratilova (1979, 1982-1987) and Helen Wills Moody (1927-1930, 1932, 1933, 1938) won this tournament the most times as the top seed (7). Margaret Smith Court (1962, 1964, 1966, 1969, 1971, 1973) failed to win this tournament the most times as the top seed (6).

Here's the performance of top women's singles seeds at the French International Championships / French Open. The top seed has won the tournament 32 out of 81 attempts but only twice in the last 19 years. Chris Evert (1974, 1975, 1979, 1980) and Margaret Smith Court (1964, 1969, 1970, 1973) won this tournament the most times as the top seed (4). Martina Hingis (1997-2001) failed to win this tournament the most times as the top seed (5). Margaret Scriven Vivian (1933) is the only unseeded player to have won the title. Francesca Schiavone is the lowest seeded player (#17) to have won the title (2010). No top seed has ever lost in the first round. Zsuzsa Kormoczy (1960) is the only top seed to have lost her first match.

Margaret Smith Court (1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1973) won this tournament the most times as the top seed (9). Martina Navratilova (1980, 1982, 1984, 1987) failed to win this tournament the most times as the top seed (4). Margaret Smith Court has been seeded #1 in singles at Grand Slam tournaments more times than any other woman. She received the top seed 30 times, and went on to justify her seeding by winning the tournament 18 times.

Martina Hingis was seeded #1 in singles at 18 Grand Slam tournaments but won only 3 of them. Her 15 defeats as the top seed is the most ever by a woman.

Updated through 2012 Wimbledon.

Serena Williams was the second #6 seed to win Wimbledon, with Maria Bueno in 1959 being the other. Williams's victory was the 10th time that a #6 seed has won a Grand Slam singles title.

Maria Sharapova has never won a Grand Slam singles title as the top seed, in four attempts.
