Re: Caroline Wozniacki statistics (index in post #1!)

Titles per semi final

1997-2011 (before US Open 2011!)
WTA including slams. This list includes the present top 10 players with at least 10 SF's since 1997. A complete list including all active players with at least 10 semifinals since 1997 is available in the stats forum.

WTA average is obviously 0,25 (1 of 4 semifinalists are always going to win the title).

Code:
                                  Titles SF's Ratio
  2 Kim Clijsters 41 82 0,5000
  3 Caroline Wozniacki 18 36 0,5000
  8 Maria Sharapova 24 65 0,3692
 16 Victoria Azarenka 7 27 0,2593
 26 Vera Zvonareva 12 55 0,2182
 30 Na Li 5 28 0,1786
 33 Marion Bartoli 6 40 0,1500
 34 Francesca Schiavone 4 29 0,1379
 39 Samantha Stosur 2 22 0,0909
Petra Kvitova is not included because I made the cut-off at 10 semifinals. But she has 5 titles for 9 semifinals, which is 0,5556. And Stosur has won another title since I made this list

Titles per quarterfinal

1997-2011 (before US Open 2011!)
WTA including slams. The list includes the present top 10 players with at least 20 QF's since 1997 (which is why Kvitova is missing on the list).

WTA average is 0,125.

Code:

I've added complete "Titles per quarterfinal"-stats in the stats forum (for players with at least 20 QF's).

Re: Caroline Wozniacki statistics (index in post #1!)

Here's a statistical breakdown of Caro's serve in the 1st and 3rd set of her 3 setters played so far this year:

1st serve winning %

1st set 65.4%
3rd set 59.5%

% of service games won
1st set 68.2%
3rd set 63.3%

Caro's 1st serve winning % was higher in the 1st set in 64.3% (9/14) of her 3 set matches.
Caro's % of service games won was higher in the 1st in 54.5% (6/11) of her 3 set matches. The % of service games won was the same in the 1st and 3rd set in 21.4% (3/14) of her 3 set matches.

If there's any additional comparisons you'd like to see, feel free to ask.

Re: Caroline Wozniacki statistics (index in post #1!)

This chart shows Wozniacki's Win/Loss ratio while being the WTA #1:

The Y-axis shows the W/L ratio. Notice that the Y-axis should ideally show the entire range 0.00-1.00, but I've zoomed in on the scale to emphasize any change in the W/L ratio. The X-axis shows the 80 matches she has played so far (as a #1) since October 2010 - listed in chronological order. The chart is cumulated, so maybe I should add some explanation. Caro won her very first match as a WTA #1 (against Dementieva at WTA Championships 2010); hence her W/L was 1.00 after her first match. Then she lost her 2nd match (against Stosur at the same tournament) which caused the W/L to drop to 0.5. Two more wins (Schiavone and Zvonareva) raised the W/L to 0.75 after 4 matches ("4" on the x-axis). And so on...

Now she has played 80 matches and lost 19, giving a W/L ratio of 0.7625. She peaked when winning the Stuttgart SF in April (match #33) when her W/L reached 0.8485 (28 wins/5 losses).

The W/L since the Stuttgart SF is quite poor by comparison: 33/14 = 0.7021.

On a sidenote: The first post in the thread is now updated with direct links to most stats in the thread. And thanks for the reps everyone!

Re: Caroline Wozniacki statistics (index in post #1!)

This is a repost of a thread I created in GM. The statistics involve many players, but you can find the data concerning specifically Caroline towards the bottom of the post.

Be advised that this is a very long post and completely uninteresting if you don't like data

To make it worse, I do not master English perfectly so the sentence structure could hurt your eyes

The following statistics relate mainly to the Top10 players. For comparison purposes, I have added some other players who have either had a season exceeding expectations or former elite players.

About Azarenka:

She has 66 wins and 8 losses, including 17/6 against the Top10. She has played 31% of her matches against the Top10, 46% of them against players outside the Top30, including 9 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She suffered only one defeat against the players outside the Top30 and only two defeats against players outside the Top10.

She has won 89% of her matches, which means that she has won 8.25 matches for each defeat.

What could I add to these data? That's just amazing

About Sharapova:

She has 56 wins and 10 losses, including 10/8 against the Top10. She has played 27% of her matches against the Top10, 45% of them against players outside the Top30, including 4 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. Apart from the players ranked in the Top10 when they met, only Kerber and Lisicki have defeated her. No player ranked outside the Top30 has beaten her.

She has won 85% of her matches, for a 5.60 ratio.
She won 55% of her matches against Top10 players in 2012, which is comparable to 58.2 for her overall career

About Serena:

She has 53 wins and 4 losses, including 13/2 against the Top10. She has played 26% of her matches against the Top10, 56% of them against players outside the Top30, including 9 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. Among those matches, she lost against Razzano (ranked 111th).

She has won 93% of her matches, for a 13.25 ratio.

As for Azarenka, these stats speak for themselves

About Radwanska:

She has 57 wins and 17 losses, including 7/9 against the Top10. She has played 22% of her matches against the Top10, 54% of them against players outside the Top30, including 16 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. These 16 matches played against players ranked outside the Top100 shows that she benefited from relatively kind draws compared to the other players in the Top5, especially since she played less than 25% of her matches against other Top10 players. OTOH, she won every one of those 16 matches, something other top players have repeatedly failed to do, as we will see. To be fair, we shall also note that 6 of her 9 losses against the Top10 happened against Azarenka. She also won 95% of her overall matches against players outside the Top30.

She has won 77% of her matches, for a 3.35 ratio. In career, she won 70% of her matches, 36% against the Top10 players

About Kerber:

She has 61 wins and 19 losses, including 8/12 against the Top10. She has played 25% of her matches against the Top10, 58% of them against players outside the Top30, including 4 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She suffered no defeat against players ranked outside the Top100 and only 4 against players outside the Top30 (Barthel, Paszek, Zheng, nothing to be ashamed). She's certainly among the players who met the most Top10 in 2012.

Certainly not my favorite player, but she has had an incredible year.
She has won 76% of her matches, for a 3.21 ratio. In career, she won 64% of her matches.

About Kvitova:

She has 45 wins and 15 losses, including 3/6 against the Top10. She has played only 15% of her matches against the Top10, 52% of them against players outside the Top30, including 7 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She lost 4 times (17%) against players ranked between 31th and 100th and twice (29%) against players outside the Top100 (including a defeat against Venus).

She has won 75% of her matches, for a 3.00 ratio.

About Na Li:

She has 41 wins and 15 losses, including 6/7 against the Top10. She has played 23% of her matches against the Top10, 55% of them against players outside the Top30, including 6 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She has suffered only 5 defeats against players outside the Top30, which shows a surprising consistency for the Chinese. Last year she had at least 8 bad losses. Among the "lesser" players who beat her in 2012, we find Cirstea, Shvedova, Robson, Hantuchova, so she didn't lost against a bunch of newcomers or marginal players.

She has won 73% of her matches, for a 2.73 ratio.

About Errani:

She has 54 wins and 20 losses, including 4/7 against the Top10. She has played 15% of her matches against the Top10, 69% of them against players outside the Top30, including 20 (yes, 20!!) matches against players ranked outside the Top100.

Out of the total of 51 matches she played against players outside the Top30, Errani lost 10 times, or 20%, a relatively high percentage for a player ranked inside the Top10. If we take into account a high percentage of defeats against lesser players, a low rate of meetings against the top 10 and an exceptionally high rate of encounters against players ranked outside the Top30, Errani definitely haven't the usual portrait of an elite player. Of note, she has won 9 of her 12 matches against players ranked between 11th and 30th.

She has won 73% of her matches, for a 2.70 ratio.

About Stosur:

She has 44 wins and 22 losses, including 2/4 against the Top10. She has played a ludicrous 9% of her matches against the Top10, 61% of them against players outside the Top30, including 10 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. Overall, she lost 25% of her matches against players ranked outside the Top30, including 3 defeats against opponents ranked outside the Top30. Her low rate of meetings against the elite players is clearly unusual, while her many losses against players outside the Top30 show her inconstancy.

She has won 67% of her matches, for a ratio of 2.00

About Bartoli:

She has 41 wins and 25 losses, including 2/8 against the Top10. She has played 15% of her matches against the Top10, 64% of them against players outside the Top30, including 8 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She's 2/11 against the players inside the Top20 and 9/2 against those ranked between 21th and 30th. She has lost nearly 30% (12 defeats) of her matches against players outside the Top30, which affects her results.

She has won 62% of her matches, for a ratio of 1.64.

About Wozniacki:

She has 46 wins and 20 losses, including 2/7 against the Top10. She has played 14% of her matches against the Top10, 53% of them against players outside the Top30, including only 3 matches against players ranked outside the Top100 (less than any Top10 players). She has won 91% of her matches against players outside the Top30, including a retirement against Medina Garrigues and a surprising defeat against Begu, a week after she injured her knee in New Haven. Regardless of those retirements, Wozniacki has a winning rate similar to the very best players against the players outside the Top30. Her problems have been mainly against the Top 11-30.

She has won 70% of her matches, for a ratio of 2.30.

It's interesting to note that she has better statistics than Stosur and Bartoli, who are nonetheless ahead of her in the ranking

About Ivanovic:

She has 36 wins and 20 losses, including 2/8 against the Top10. She has played 18% of her matches against the Top10, 65% of them against players outside the Top30, including 7 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She lost only 6 matches out of 31 against players ranked outside the Top30, which shows some consistency. OTOH, she continues to struggle against every in-form players.

She has won 64% of her matches, for a ratio of 1.8.

About Kirilenko:

She has 33 wins and 22 losses, including 2/7 against the Top10. She has played 16% of her matches against the Top10, 67% of them against players outside the Top30, including 10 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. As for Ivanovic, she showed some consistency against the players ranked outside the Top30, with 28 wins and 9 losses.

Unfortunately, her 5 wins and 13 losses against the Top30 players are not satisfactory for a Top20 player (at least in my opinion). It's doubtful that she could keep such a high ranking unless she improves her winning rate against those players.

She has won 60% of her matches, for a ratio of 1.5.

About Jankovic (if you're her fan, you don’t even want to see it, believe me):

She has 33 wins and 29 losses, including 1/7 against the Top10. She has played 13% of her matches against the Top10, 63% of them against players outside the Top30, including 18 matches against players ranked outside the Top100. She’s 7/10 against the Top30 players, 12/15 against those ranked between 31-100 and 14/4 against players ranked outside the top 100.

She has won 53% of her matches, for a ratio of 1.14

Re: Caroline Wozniacki statistics (index in post #1!)

Interesting overview. A gap between Serena , Azarenka vs Sharapova is significant! No wonder that Sharapova is showing a lack of confidence.

I think you mean outside the Top100 (Hradecka, Flipkens, Chang).

Excellent overview, otherwise.

Thanks. You're right about the correction.

Re: Caroline Wozniacki statistics (index in post #1!)

Thanks for those stats, KleineBiere. Could you make a comparison between Caroline and the whole Top20? (after the grass season)It would give a better portrait.
