Re: Most succesful years of birth on the WTA right now

Actually I was just looking at this list yesterday and thinking there are no stars born after 1991. This list confirms it. I mean there literally are none.

It looks like these generations will only win when the likes of the Williams sisters and Sharapova retire.

Sharpie hasn't been successful in slam finals in a while.

She's reached 2 out of the last 3 slam finals.

I also mean that these players are not stars. Wozniacki, maybe. But she's a star like Kournikova was. Except Kournikova was actually better.

Re: Most succesful years of birth on the WTA right now

For some reason there is a huge dip in talent after 1990. I mean when 'Generation Suck' was 18-19, there were plenty in the Top 50 and they frequently were seeded in tournaments. Hardly anyone born between 1992-1994 has been able to do that and they're turning/have turned 18-20 this year.

Another way of looking at it is that it takes players to get to 23 or 25 to dominate these days

It's interesting how 1989 and 1987 are at the top but 1988 is #6. Wonder why that is ...

But the average points for 89 is better. Helped by Azarenka and Radwanska.
87 is full of players of the calibre of Pironkova and Soler-Espinosa. Although they have two former number ones. Ana and Sharapova

Just as importatly perhaps the 1987 group is also the hottest on tour - Sharapova, Kirilenko, Ivanovic and Chaky

If you ask me the more players from a certain year that are ranked in the top 100, the more "successful" that year is.

Re: Most succesful years of birth on the WTA right now

Obviously tennis is now dominated by players born between 1980-91.

70s players:
It is clear that once players reach 32, they seem to retire/become doubles specialists/drop in the rankings. Greta Arn (1978) has just dropped out of the top 100, Tamarine Tanasugarn (1977) has barely played this year and is presumably going to retire at Wimbledon/Olympics, as she won't be top 100 after the grass court season. Date Krumm (1970) is just a phenomenon, but she can't last more than 12 more months in the game, one would presume....

1992-3
1992 was clearly a very poor year as only Christina McHale has been able to establish herself as a regular in WTA tour main draws - Heather Watson, the second best player, has already fallen out of the top 100 and is struggling to find her way back, though at least she hasn't exactly slumped. The next best 1992 girls, Karolina Pliskova, Ormaechea and Arruabarrena Vecino have all improved substantially recently but ranked 121-131, are still some way off becoming top 100 players and really need to qualify for RG plus win a round or two there to get those big points to move up.

1993
The main bright news has been the arrival of Timea Babos this year, as Sloane Stephens seems to have stalled. The next best players, Muguruza Blanco and Garcia are very talented, though Muguruza Blanco is in a much stronger position as far as breaking the top 100 is concerned as Garcia's progress has been hampered by poor form and she will now be defending 2r RG points as well.

1994-5
No reps in the top 100 - the race is now on to see if and when Laura Robson (94) and Yulia Putintseva (95) can break the top 100. Putintseva looks the more likely at this stage, given her recent surge in the rankings and Robson's poor form and injury problems, though Robson is the sort of player who can pull a good result out of nowhere....
